I couldn't resist - I bought the VCC and FG-X from Audiodeluxe. I've heard so much about these plugs and have almost pulled the trigger a few times before, but I couldn't hold back any longer.

FWIW I've got all the Slate plugs and really love them. I really wouldn't want to be without them.

FG-X is in its own league. Nothing can touch it. I master all of my client's material and I could not live without it. When I purchased it when it first came out I breathed a huge sigh and said "Finally. Transients intact without pulling teeth."Prime Mover wrote:I take that back, I'm gonna pass on this. Yeah, IMNSHO the FG-X just smokes the L3 (unless perhaps you need to heavily use the multi-band functionality, in which case you may want to remix anyway...) The L3 sounds plastic-y next to the FG-X. In my NSH opinion...
There's a few hours left on this sale. If you can swing it, get everything (VCC, VTM, and FG-X). Some of the best plug-ins in audio these days.

Arrgh.... totally got carried away from something else I was considering for my birthday (uhhh....DP8) and grabbed FG-X, but it requires iLok 2. Thought I already had it, but turns out I have iLok 1 which somewhat mitigates the savings.....apparently Slate will offer Cyber Monday customers a deal on the iLok 2 later this week, though.
So.... how's the VCC!

VCC is great but as its 1/2 the price of the DP8 upgrade I'd go for DP8,Slate always have sales.
They will probably have another good sale for NAMM.

Re: Holy crap who's buying all the Slate plugins today??
If Chris and Kubi both say that the FG-X is the limiter to have, I'm in. I just bought it sight-unseen. Reading about it now. Sound crazy? Well, let's just say I trust these guys. And… it happens that I'm in the market for a serious limiter. I keep getting digital noise in the L3 Multimaximizer. That's without even doing any multi band stuff, and with a very conservative threshold. It's subtle. Most people I play it for don't hear it, but I do. So, I'm looking for something that preserves the integrity of the sound while doing some conservative limiting. I'm surprised at the L3. This is the first project it's done this on, but the music is extreme in its dynamics and range. (classical trio)
So, I'm hoping to be blown away tomorrow when I try this. I have a feeling that won't be a problem.

Re: Holy crap who's buying all the Slate plugins today??
That’s exactly the correct way to look at all of this.Radiogal wrote:
Just bought it and haven´t used it IRL yet, so I can´t give a verdict.
But by experience with so many plugins in my arsenal, I know that different plugins work on different sources.. Not always is the L3 best for mastering.. and not always is the Inflator useful on a mix or track.
So for me it´s another alternative and another color on the palette.
So many come on the forums soooo worried that any given purchase “does it all”.
None do it all. ALL do it all.
One needs all or a lot of plugs, like a painter needs lots of colors.
What does FG-X normally cost by the way?

I almost got sucked into the sale, but I'm pretty happy with Ozone5 for mastering and all my MCDSP plugs for compression and warmth. The online demos of the Slate plugs haven't really blown me out of the water.

As do I, not sure what's causing it, but I'm hearing quite a bit of itShooshie wrote:I keep getting digital noise in the L3 Multimaximizer. That's without even doing any multi band stuff, and with a very conservative threshold. It's subtle. Most people I play it for don't hear it, but I do.

I do disagree about multiband being only needed for badly mixed material though. Sometimes even in the right mix, a frequency will just get away from you... either by multiplied signals, or just by a couple instruments sticking out together at the same time. I'm not too proud to use a multiband, I think it's a useful tool. Maybe there's a great setup for both FG-X and L3 working in tandem. I've often heard that it's good to spread out limiting/compression duties among a number of processors.
Sucks that it requires an iLok... even worse that it requires an iLok2 (which I don't have), back up to $150 for the entire package. I'm so happy to have ditched the iLok with Waves V9. I'll wait 'till NAMM, and then we'll see.
