Great! I just did. If anyone else'd care to try, here's the .dv I sent to MOTU that could not be opened in DP8: http://prayforrain.com/misc/test.dv.zip

Thanks so much MLC!

FYI, I am using Flip for Mac if that matters. I don't see why it should.

In case anyone else is having this problem, PM's between MLC and me revealed that the DV file that did work for him in DP8 was created long ago with an old version of Quicktime Pro. Neither he nor I, nor MOTU were able to open DV files that were created more recently with the latest QT Pro (is that about right MLC?). Thinking there might be another way to export a playable DV, I tried changing some export settings, but I can find no way to make a .dv that DP8 recognizes.

That is exactly correct. Love collaborating member to member to solve problems. Beats the heck out of just coming in when you have an issue and leave just as quickly... just sayin'

I've said it before (In the Post Production forum)...and I will say it again at the risk of saying suggesting this too much...so forgive me...but using a program like VideoSlave to drive and display video instead of DP has really made things smooth in the video dept for me.

VideoSlave VTR does not care what codec it is using. Even Avid codecs are ok. It slaves to MIDI-timecode via any input you can give it...including a MIDI-over-LAN channel to another "slave" machine. It will play "full screen" HD video. Firewire out from DP will not be HD. DP8 can do full screen HD through one of their video devices....but then again...some folks are having issues thus far. If you host VideoSlave on a separate computer or MacMini...or Laptop even...it will free up CPU cycles on your DAW machine. DP8's new video engine harnesses the power of your graphics card to drive video...not the CPU. BUT firewire out is controlled by CPU cycles in the OS. You can load all of your QTs in VideoSlave and in order...they will just near instantly sync to your session if you tell DP to send out MIDI-timecode on a channel it can slave to.

This was initially developed when composer Charlie Clouser (SAW films, American Horror Story)...wanted a 100% solid and yet affordable VTR solution you could run on any machine....even an older Intel Mac lying around...as the only other software solution out there was a couple thousand dollars and hardware VTRs are much more. He approached Florian Loferer, a German software developer he met on some forums...and VideoSlave was born. It has been in beta for a year or so...and it now released.

A free demo is on the website. The demo stops working after 5 minutes of run time. But just start it up again for another 5 minutes, etc...
Regards,

Brian Ralston

Ya'know... I've been trying my .dv movies in DP8 launched in 64 bit. In 32 bit they load just fine, even the new ones.

This may be a video codec issue that is not 64-bit. QuickTime X (which is 64-bit) uses QuickTime 7.x via QTKit to run older codecs that have not made the transition to 64-bit. Hmmmmm......

That's not my experience. DVs are grayed in both 32bit and 64bit mode in DP8. I'd love to hear from a third person (apart from MLC and myself) about this. Can others import DV files into DP8? Here's a tiny one you can try: http://prayforrain.com/misc/test.dv.zip

The VideoSlave looks interesting, but I've always been pretty happy with video handling with DP until now. (As I do with all major upgrades) I'm hoping DP8 doesn't diminish functionality, creating a need for another app for basic tasks. My situation may be unique, but I'm sure that's not what MOTU intended when they improved the video engine.

Oh pshaw! I'm sorry, it was a similarly titled .mov that I misread. My bad. .dv still a no go in any version of DP8.

POO! Sorry, dix.

That's okay. Its better news that everyone has the problem rather than just me. That way MOTU must fix it. …its in the specs, its in the manual, its even mentioned in the dp8 tutorial video. they'll have to fix it at some point (soon i hope!).

No .dv working here...

I'm running 10.7.5

Maybe it works running DP8 in 10.8?

Anyone?

Best,

Resuscitating this thread to see if DP8.01 now plays back .dv files reliably, and if therefore the firewire video output works reliably (which of course needs dv files to function properly.)

Any testimonials re. DP8.01 and dv files/firewire video output?

Thanks!!!!!

I think dix reported it wasn't working. Maybe you can search his posts to find it. I don't have my system running but will try when I do.
