DP copies/erases data randomly it seems

Post by vladat »

Hi everybody, tried finding the answer to this, but couldn't.

When I move notes, either as a region or in the MIDI editor, they are either copied or deleted with no obvious reason or sense. As you can imagine it's driving me crazy.
Also I had a problem with notes being stacked exactly the same, I think just unplugging the MIDI in to my digital piano might have helped. If you have something more elegant let me know.
But the first problem is absolutely preventing me from working, please help!

Hmmm...

You mean "copied" as in duplicated?
You mean when you move selected MIDI notes, after you release the mouse, some notes are missing from the original selection?

If so, I never heard of that one before.

What is your Cursor Selector Mode set to? (Preferences, under Tools). It can be set to a few things such as regions, selections-only, or something like that. I don't even know if that has anything to do with your issue, but just check it's set to All Selections.

How are you moving the notes exactly? Are you selecting them and simply dragging them to a new horizontal location?
Do you have the Quantize function on or off?

Have you checked that you don't have the MIDI Edit option checked in the GE window? (the one you call the MIDI-Editor, under the little triangle all the way to the upper left). This could make notes stack like you are describing, me thinks...

Which DP and OS versions are you using?
Mac Mini Server i7 2.66 GHs/16 GB RAM / OSX 10.14 / DP 9.52
Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,
Vienna Instruments SUPER PACKAGE, Waves Mercury, slaved iMac and Mac Minis running VEP 7, etc.

Are you using DP8? If so, you may be experiencing the Keyboard Focus bug, in which DP quits responding to keyboard commands and even menus in some cases. If so, pushing Option while dragging would not copy anything, since DP never "hears" the Option key. Therefore, you end up just moving the event, rather than duplicating it.

That may not be the problem, but it could be part of it.

@FMiguelez,
the Prefs/tools is set to All Selections.
I either select the notes in the GE window (if that's the tab between Drum and QuickScribe)and drag them, or I cut/copy them and try to paste elsewhere, or move the whole region from the Tracks window. The result is the same, notes are either copied, but not all of them, or they disappear completely.
About the Quantize function, I don't know, I never had it quantize automatically, if that's possible. Where is that?
For the MIDI Edit, if you meant under the top right triangle, it's unchecked.

I'm still using DP 7.24, and OS X 10.6.8

@Shooshie
No, I'm on 7.24, and this seems more like the Option key is on for some notes when I drag them, even without pressing it.

Thank you both for your ideas, I'll try to see if the problem magically solved itself since yesterday. Not very likely.

I had a similar issue to this once, and trashing the preferences fixed it. No idea what caused it, but I was glad it was fixed!

Hi guys, I have exactly the same problem and it´s driving me crazy too. The problem showed up in my DP 7.24 and continued when I upgraded to version 8.
Motu support have no idea of what can be.

Perhaps a stuck key or short in an inout device that is sending intermittent delete or option (copy) messages. It's more than possible.

Yes, it occurred to me that my usb keyboard (as in letters and numbers, not musical) could have a stuck key, but it also happens when I unplug it.
I haven't noticed anything weird with the MacBook either.
Plus, it's only in DP.
Once I catch some air from work I'll try making all the preferences default, to see if anything happens.
At least this is making me play more precisely, so that I don't have to move stuff around too much.

I posted this as a reply in a similar thread, after solving the problem with the instructions on this link:

@williemyers,

You're a good man, Charlie Brown! I tried checking and unchecking those damn filters after posting the help cry in that other thread I started, but now I tried checking both on again and it worked!
You just gave me my will to work back again, many thanks :dance:

For someone reading this in the future, here was my problem: when I dragged either the regions, or a group of notes in any editor, vertically or horizontally, some of them would get copied, and some deleted, totally randomly. Over a month of doing projects, since the problem started (no idea how), I believe this cost me like 20 additional hours of unnecessary dic*ing around, it was a nightmare.
You da man. :headbang:

Leaving the one-post copycat with the clue to how to fix his problem, if it is indeed real.

The guy who chimed in saying that he has the exact same problem, probably was jumping on the bandwagon to dis DP. That happens, though it doesn't mean he was doing that. Still, I place the likelihood very high that he was just doing a copy-cat criticism.

Ah, ok, thanks.
Well, for what it's worth, I think DP is great, now that everything's back to normal.

Agentofrandom, Williemyers, vladat - THANK YOU! for posting this. I've been occasionally frustrated with this since purchasing DP7 as an upgrade from (very very old) DP2 and using DP5 at work.

I contacted DP tech support last year on this but they hadn't heard of this problem yet. Just so you guys know I'm not a troller, I had posted my problem to this forum in more than one spot, latest example below from thread "Is DP8 unusable?"...

QUESTION: Does MOTU tech support know of this problem and corresponding solution you found? I would like to suggest that they are informed of the solution. Could help many other DP users suffering from the same issue.

DPINCGK wrote: I'm using DP 7.24 on an i7 MacbookPro OS 10.6.8, 8GB RAM. For the past year (or so) since I upgraded, I've been dealing with a particularly nasty bug in DP 7.24 where if I select a bunch of MIDI notes in one or more tracks in any view - and then do an editing action such as (delete, transpose, move, shift notes, etc.) some of the notes either in the selection itself or in the neighborhood of the selection elsewhere on the track will disappear - the are gone forever and it can't be undone. It's a strange bug and it can be extremely damaging when it happens. I've tried to find the source of the bug, I've tried supposed solutions to no avail, but I have now unfortunately had to change my workflow to deal with the bug (and it's not easy). I miss my earlier, simpler, more stable version but I was hoping that upgrading to DP8 will fix my selection / editing problem.
