Exploding MIDI drums

Post by Alan Craig »

I have a lot of old files that used MIDI drums, with all instruments in a single track (kick, snare, symbols, toms, etc).

To have a better control of the mix, I'd like to 'explode' these so that each instrument has its own mono track.

Is there a quick way of doing this, or do I have to create individual tracks and cut and paste from the drum window? It sounds like it should be a feature (which I'm sure I've seen somewhere, sometime …).

I haven't been a regular here for some while now (I've had a few 'life' diversions), so it's good to see most of the old hands still doing their bit. I've just upgraded to DP8, and it seems to be working perfectly right from the start! Great work MOTU.

Love the new themes (remember the hot debate and jailbreaks with DP6?), and I have a confession to make: I really like 'Plasma'! Am I alone? :|

Good to be back.

Alan, see page 573, split tracks by pitch in the Region menu.

Ah ... thank you Bayswater!

I've used Split Notes before to select individual notes in a track, but had forgotten that I could select 'all notes' and paste into separate tracks.

Cheers,

Another thing you can do is, if each drum has its own note, in the graphic editor, go to the piano scroll notes on the left and double-click the note on the virtual keyboard. It will select all the instances of just that note in the sequence. Then you can do the usual stuff with it- cut, copy, paste into a new track, etc.

Yeah split Command, "separate note by pitch" is definitely the fastest way to do this.
