is ANYONE actually using CUEMIX?

Post by wonder »

So for a while now I've been trying to decipher how to get GOOD headphone mixes to the band in the tracking rooms.

As of right now I simply use my Tascam DM 24 to send 6 aux's to my HEARBACK system (which is nice cause I can add FX and it has a talkback mic...but NOT nice cause the screen doesn't work any more and it's ONLY 6 aux when I can handle 8).

As i've messed around with CUEMIX ... it just seems like another thing to worry about. Like adding a second mixer with gain stage and more headache where it's not needed. I feel like I have to know Trigonometry to figure this thing out ... and i swear I'm not that dum(b).
And, you have to use one of your mic pre's to add talkback feature.

With DP refusing to allow us to assign AUX sends to multiple tracks at once, the time it takes to send 24 tracks to different BUSSES and OUTPUTS is just ridiculous and gives me hand cramps just thinking about all the mouse clicks.

I guess I"m wondering how you guys go about feeding headphone cues using DP? Outboard mixer? CUEMIX? 2MIX from DP?

I am by no means a noob to DP or studio stuff but def don't have an SSL console sitting here to be able to route 24 different headphone cues on my massive board.
Im trying to find the best solution for headphone cues, and CUEMIX seems like it's more of a hassle than a help.

ps, paragraph 2 should read "and I can handle 8"

the "cool guy emoticon" was unintentional.

Am I missing something? Why is there Trim control on the inputs?

So I set my preamp level perfectly, then can have it messed up by cuemix software?

Why trim controls?

I use CueMix all the time when tracking. It does take a bit of doing to wrap your head around it, at least it did for me, but once I got the hang of it, it became invaluable. If you're good setting levels with your mic pres you can basically forget about the trim/gain knobs in CueMix.
I use it to drive my Furman mix it yourself system. So I send out 4 mono mixes and 1 stereo mix from CueMix. I also use it to send those signals being recorded out to a reverb unit and I bring the reverberated signal back into DP via an Aux channel.
Let me know if you have questions, I'm glad to help.

Not LIKE a mixer. It IS a mixer -- or rather the interface for the mixer in the MOTU hardware. That's why it has trim controls. Doesn't really work as an add on to another mixer. But as a mixer, for me, it works pretty much like any other.

+1 For example, I'm pressing the mic inputs from my Track 16 into service as ins for my keyboard. Cue mix allows that. It also allows me to mix the various ins and outs of the T16 at different levels. Basically it's an interface for the FW device, not a "mixer" mixer (as above w/Baywater).

I use CueMix every day.

CueMix is THE feature that has allowed me to operate efficiently without a separate mixer for years. It works perfectly to sum my hardware MIDI gear and outboard FX with the computer output for tracking, monitoring and mixing.

So, to answer your question, I offer an unequivocal YES!

I also use a PreSonus Monitor Station (beefy headphone amps) to feed my headphone mixes, although it limits me to two distinct mixes, but most of my sessions are involve no more than two or three musicians at a time anyway. Adding the Monitor Station to my rig made it very user friendly; no more tweezing my 828mkII's tiny little volume knob.

The only thing about Cuemix I don't like is that it is MOTU hardware dependent, but that's not unusual for these kinds of programs. Same for Focusrite and M-Audio "mini mixer programs." They're designed for the device, not for the actual mixing environment. That may be where the o/p is not understanding the intended use.

Good to hear from everyone ... I guess I just haven't dug into cuemix.

I just like my "set it once and forget it" solution I had for headphones with my tascam dm 24 aux sends.

I use it (probably incorrectly) just to work around a few frequency spikes in my ghetto studio.

It pays to play around with CueMix until you fully understand what it does and how it works. I don't know if this has changed in recent years, but in the past, different interfaces had different capabilities in CueMix. In some, the menus and workflow were quite different, especially in comparing PCI-based CueMix vs. Firewire. If you use legacy interfaces like mine — 1296, 896, and even the 2408mkII — you will see a much smaller set of features and actions.

But just learning to use it gives you options to consider in special circumstances, rather than waiting for those circumstances to come along, then not knowing what possibilities await you. In other words, learn it now, use it later, or else you won't know to use it when you need it most.

I have CueMix setup the way I want it with reverb for vocal tracking.
It was trial and error to setup and now I don't touch it in case I mess something up.
I love to see a detailed how to CueMix tutorial.
