yeah, yeah, yeah! that's it. that way all of the VIs show up as an aux track and from there i can re-bus them to an audio track and print them along with the external (VSL on another mac in Logic) aux tracks that i already have. Also i can see everything in the same mix page window. Thanks Shooshie

Right. That's why the first thing you do after capturing the audio to a track is to Create User Timestamp. After that if you change the start time of a (duplicated) Chunk you simply Move To User Timestamp to get the audio back in sync.It seems that when you make the audio track from the QT movie there is no Time stamp. I get a message saying that "None of the selected sound bites have time stamps"

cool, so does that mean when you move the chunk to say 01.05.14.12 that the front end of the audio files gets trimmed off or does it do like in the movie window? just put the starting point at the new start time and ay audio to the left just gets tucked into the -01.00.00.00 side of the sequence?
i'll give it a try and let you know what i get.
thanks

No. DP won't extend the sequence back for you. In this case you'd trim the audio to 01.05.14.12 *before* you hit Move to User Timestamp.

the V-racks AUX thing works great!

alright, here is the wrap-up to my chunks adventure.
so I am now on episode 3 of a 5 part documentary. I decided to jump into the scoring with chunks lifestyle. I will never go back to not using chunks for scoring. FABULOUS!!!!
now, for the 2 different ways i have been working.
first way is the easiest but with a workaround. I got picture that had audio married to it and it worked fantastic. the workaround being that the QT sound had to be adjusted on the QT window slider. option click mute toggle was a dream.
the other way that i got picture required some thinking and prep to get it to go smoothly but it worked as well. this time picture came with no audio so i had to make an audio track in protools (as i am also the re-recording mixer i just did a dialog pre dub and bounced it as a mono file, then imported it into DP.
So the prep work has to do with getting a timestamp of this imported audio right at the beginning on the first chunk, the chunk that will be the one that you spot to and then copy over and over again.
the organization part is getting this all done first so that you don't have to re-timestamp the file over and over again for each chunk. As i spotted i wrote down the start points for the chunks. then when it came time to create them and change the startpoints i deleted everything on that imported audio track up to the new not yet created startpoint. once i deleted the audio i was ready to change the start TC after changing the start TC i remapped the audio to "Move to user timestamp". this moved the picture audio in sync to the chunk.
the pitfalls were purely organizational. I did things out of order, because I was still figuring out what I was doing, and those things complicated matters but not too, too much. As I am not really under the gun it was the perfect project to try all of this out.
I am pretty happy about the results.
not to mention that I'm in LA and my guitarist is in Paris, France and we are sending MIDI files back and forth along with guitar tracks and that has been really smooth as we have been working like this for years. oh, by the way, he's in Logic.
If anyone has questions feel free to post them and I'll do my best to share what I have learned.
For the film composer Chunks with V-racks is really too cool.
thanks MOTU!
now where is Mach V II?

to be honest it's all of your collective input that has inspired me to keep trying new things that will ultimately streamline my process and let me concentrate on composing. it's nice to have the time to experiment right now because when the pressure is on it's about being efficient with the mechanics while being creative with the music.
i have in fact learned more these past 2 weeks with perormer than in the last 20 years using it.
that's what has been VERY satisfying to me.
