DP8 overwrites modified .midnam .middev files.

Post by NazRat »

Just a heads up - had some modified Kurzweil MIDI definitions that were overwritten on the DP8 install. I don't believe that has happened installing or updating up over the last few versions. Plenty of backup so no problem here. On a related note, Cherry Picker still requires Rosetta or PPC, so if you're on Lion or ML you're SOL if you need to create this stuff - it's most tedious in any text/xml editor.

Overwrote 4 of mine and left 2 alone. I had to go through the process for the Proteus 2000 to get the expansion card recognized.

I haven't done it yet for the others.

I have an old email from Andy, I believe, from Cherry Picker that described how to get the Proteus 2000 with the expansion card to show up properly. The same process will probably work with the other 3 devices, once I locate the midnam files.

Doesn't help, though, if you customized some patch lists unless they are backed up via Time Machine or some other dedicated backup.

Hi Buzzy, maybe you can help answer this.
I have a modified Motif patch file that I had to go back and fetch (Time Machine) after DP8 install.
I put it in the appropriate folder Library>Audio>MIDI Devices>Motu>Yamaha but it does not show up in the list of patches when accessing in DP app or even Audio MIDI setup.
Is there a different place I need to drop this into?
Several devices are not cross referenced as I notice now. What folder is being accessed when searching?

Thanks for any advice.

Woodlakesound, you can try this. This is from the Cherry Picker developer.

(Ignore the reference to my particular patch midnam and the final folder path.)
I would do the following to force DP to see the updates:

1) Quit DP, and trash your Proteus 2000.midnam
2) Put it (the copy) into the /Library/Audio/MIDI Devices/MOTU/E-mu Systems folder
3) Start AMS, delete your Proteus 2000 device, and quit AMS
4) Start up DP, and Quit once it has opened
5) Start AMS, add a new device, and make sure you select E-Mu Systems and Proteus 2000 from the Pop-up menus. Wire it up
6) Start up DP again - you should see the patches!

Rob
Maybe it will work for you. I think that I still have one device that I can not get the patch lists back for.

Tried it..... but still not showing up. I saw the device name that I trashed(&emptied) still there and the device name I placed in the folder not showing. Again, the two access points are not the same. Quite a number of additional devices in the Audio MIDI and DP windows. Why am I seeing to different sets of devices? My finder shows a different set than DP and AMS.
Thanks for any additional help.

If you are restoring a Motif file that has slashes in the name, i.e. Motif 6/7/8.midnam, try renaming it with the ^ replacement - Motif 6^7^8.midnam. I noticed that in the new defs they've eliminated the slashes in the file names probably because they cause difficulties across platforms. If that's not it, what is the name of the .midnam file you are copying from backup?

Hi thanks for the assistance.
I have a rack Motif called XS so the file is MotifXS.midnam. I made it from Cherry Picker years ago.
Can you explain why I am seeing two different sets of devices in what seems to be the same location? When I look at the finder window the Motu devices shows different ones as opposed to the Audio MIDI or DP.

If I can figure the answer to that then I'll have my patchlist found!
This must have a simple answer but I have yet to hear one.

There's no entry for a MotifXS in the new Yamaha.middev file. If you were using Cherry Picker when you created the .midnam it would have handled that for you. You could move the current Yamaha.middev file out and restore your old one - should do the trick. It's in the same folder where you moved the .midnam file. Or you could edit the new Yamaha.middev to include a matching entry for MotifXS. Regardless make sure you have good copies of the stuff you're replacing.

As far as the devices being different - do you have Pro Tools or Cubase installed also? They have their own sets of device files that are installed and as far as I can tell, coremidi just puts them all together as best it can for the AMS selection list.

Interesting, I didn't know what .middev represented.
If I restore the original .middev file from Time Machine I should see the MotifXS again?
And no, I just have installed DP but Logic as well (which I don't use).
I'm going to mess with this within the next hour or so and report back.
Thanks again.

I'm thoroughly confused. :banghead:

I located an older yamaha.middev file and put it in the /Library/Audio/MIDI Devices/MOTU/Yamaha folder.

I opened and closed Audio MIDI Setup at least twice and the same with DP8.

I deleted the old Yamaha P-50 during this process which is the one that I was trying to retrieve the patch list for.

Creating a new device still did not show the P-50 anywhere in the Yamaha choices.

So, I shut down and restarted.

Opened DP8 and it alerted me that the P-50 could not be found ('cause I deleted it) and offered "new external device" as an option which is how I had previously left AMS.)

I went back to AMS and chose Yamaha as the manufacturer and manually entered "P-50" in the "Model" field.

DP immediately changed "new external device" to "P-50" and the patch list was there. :)

I have absolutely no idea why...

I gave up on DP8 and reinstalled DP7..... and updated again to DP7.24.
Just had a session and my Roland 5080 lost its expansion board names in DP.
How do I get them back?
All is well

Go back up about 7 posts to mine and see if that helps.

Hope so...

Hi, I'm also experiencing this with DP 8, and it has affected DP 6 as well. I have a Roland RD-700GX with a couple of SRX cards. The SRX patches I can normally see in the patchlist are gone, with only a basic RD-700 list. Audio MIDI setup now does not allow me to select GX or SX from the Roland list, only RD-700. The midnam and middev files are still sitting there in the MOTU>Roland folders, so what to do? Thanks!
