Constantly have to re-enter channel names...

Post by nk_e »

Hi all, one other question please.

I have to constantly re-enter channel name information....but for only 2 of the audio interfaces I use. I have three 828 mk2 and one 828 mk3. They appear in CueMix FX in this order:

MOTU 828mk2 #1
MOTU 828mk2 #2
MOTU 828mk3 Hybrid
MOTU 828mk2 #4

Channel names for 828 mk2 nos. 1 & 2 were entered ages ago and I have not had to re-enter them again. (Through software driver updates, installs, re-installs, whatever, the channel names are there.) For the 828 mk3 (a new unit), and 828 mk2 #4 (a unit I have had for years also), I ALWAYS have to re-enter channel name info...at least once a day. (Note: The 828 mk3 replaces a seemingly permanently "christmas lit" 8pre. However, I had this same problem with the 8pre also.) It just seem like the channel names for the last two interfaces in the list never "take".)

I've saved hardware configuration files, but when I recall them, the names have reverted to the generic info.

'Tis a bit maddening this is.....any advice would help (and thank you).

I've lived with it for years with the 828 and a 2408. No idea how to fix it. As per another thread, I notice it happens frequently if I change a preference in another app that deals with master audio device settings. For example, if I change the audio output settings in a standalone VI, in Logic, or in DSP-Q, things will be messed up in the channel names and the bundles when I go back to DP. Cuemix seems to be implicated in there somewhere too. So maybe it's something that has to be fixed at the OS level, and is beyond the control of any application.

Since going to ML and DP 8, I also see the system generating multiple instances of the MIDI connection for my 828 in AudioMIDI Setup, and these show up in various places in DP. If I delete them, they show up again after a few days.

I'd like to see some sort of document on CoreAudio and CoreMIDI that explains how all this works, and how they interact with the device drivers.

Thanks. Yes, I saw this comment in the other thread...it actually prompted me to start this new thread in the hopes someone might shed some light.

I think you are on to something though. There seems to be an unconfirmed correlation between tweaking with my aggregate device settings (for non-DP stuff) and/or audio drivers, and weird behavior now that you mention it. Not sure though.

There's such a dearth of commentary on it...either everyone is "just used to it", or there are only a "lucky few" who experience this.... :?

I have this problem with different interfaces, and also that when moving a DP file from different machines that links between tracks and VI's are often broken-- where the VI has to be reloaded into the track, and the tracks outputs are italics requiring me to manually reset each one individually. (I wish that was able to be worked with in the bundles window (which is a time-saver for relinking and renaming i/o).

I have the same problem, and have for awhile. When I do something, oh open the wrong VEP instance, or tickle and audio setting in the driver or set up, something of the nature you describe, all of my names default to original. It's a pain!

There also seems to be some bugs here in the drivers or software which are really preventing me from setting up my daw the way I want. Using two 828mkII's here and DP 8 can't remember that I have two devices after I save a project. Only once in awhile it does. I have to shift-select in audio hardware every time. I guess for now I have to forget about setting up bundles and any templates. I'm going to do some more testing and submit a report to Motu.

I don't even use 828's MIDI... I wonder if deleting the MIDI system file will affect the audio operation. that multiple device bug is pretty annoying.

I didn't get the multiple instance problem with the 828 under SL. The MOTU site has not yet verified that the drivers are compatible with ML, so this might be cleared up in the next update.
