New iMacs-no superdrive

Post by cuttime »

Be warned. My wife was getting ready to pre-order one, and when we took a closer look at it we put on the brakes. She went with a 2011-style model, which, by the way, is getting hard to come by.

You can buy an external DVD drive/burner for $30-50 that would work fine with the new iMac. I have one for those rare times that I need it...

Yes, especially for desktop computers, having to use an external CD/DVD burner is a none-issue.
I'd rather they get rid of them and save space/make room for more important stuff.

Presumably, yes, however the adapter requires ML AFAIK.

Well considering these are new models that will be only be shipping with ML anyway is it really that big of a deal?
It's not like anyone will actually have SnowLeopard installed on these new Macs.
Yeah the extra cost & footprint of an adaptor is a bit clunky but FireWire devices will still be operational with the newer Macs.

Macs policy sometimes seems a bit incomprehensibly to me....

The entire Mac will probably require ML. If it's like a lot of new Macs, it won't even boot in an older OS version.

Strange though, they kept FW 800 in the new Mini.

No Firewire!!?? Ouch that hurts. All of my libraries and samples are on firewire drives. So I would need to buy an entire fleet of new drives in addition to the computer. Not good.

Guess I'll hold out for the 2013 Mac Pro if it's ever released. That better have firewire ports or I'm going to 'occupy' Apple ;)

Since a Mac always had only 1 FireWire bus wouldn't "in theory" a Thunderbolt/FireWire adaptor going to a FW hub work for the FW drives?

In theory, yes. But I'm wondering if the adapter will allow for seamless streaming of large samples, or if its purpose is for merely copying files.

I suppose time and user feedback will tell.

I assume TB technology having a larger thru-put than FW there'd have to be a major flaw in the technology for this not to work,I guess time will tell.

Yeah, but what good are new technologies if nobody wants to adopt them?

The newer technology looks great but a lot of us have many Firewire devices. The Thunderbolt to F/W adaptor does not power MOTU's ( or any ) audio interfaces. Issue maybe on a Lap Top in certain circumstances… and I'm not sure it's a good idea to chain HDs , F/W, after an audio interface.
I have a MBP 17" ( luckily purchased B4 Mac discontinued them ) and use an Express card that adds 2 more F/W Ports. I 'think' this adds another F/W bus? I connect my HD's to those and use the built in F/W port to power my Ultralite.
But everything is changing now and we still have a lot of F/W goodies. So we all have our unique way to deal with Macs disappearing F/W ports.
Sorry to stray OT on the iMac but F/W issues are wide spread.
