A Question for Magic D...

Post by mike_o »

or whomever gets DP 8 first.

Looking at the motu website they are listing VST/Rewire support as a new feature.

http://www.motu.com/products/software/dp/specs.html

Now VST support is a new feature, but rewire has been there for a long time, I've been Rewiring Reason into DP since I started on DP 5 in 2006.

Does this possibly mean that DP can now be a Rewire slave behind another program?

Or is this just being re-stated as a part of the promotional info?

I would love to see DP have the option of being a rewire slave so that I could put Ableton Live in the lead position and have DP slaved to it and receiving MIDI from it.

so...

Is DP Rewire Slave and Master capable now, or is it just being stated again for the sake of new windows customers.

Thanks for any info regarding this.

Mike

DP does not run as a Rewire slave. What is new is Rewire support for DP on Windows.

Mike,

it's a bit of a hack but Live can send MIDI to DP over Interapplication MIDI and get the result with soundflower. The explanation below is very literal - when you've done it once it won't look so complicated.
  • In DP go to Setup -> Interapplication MIDI. If nothing is listed under 'Inputs' press 'Add' and you should see 'DP Input' appear.
  • Quit DP and start Live, then restart DP. (This bypasses Rewire).
  • In Live add a MIDI track and open the 'configure' dialog for 'MIDI To'. Somewhere in the list of MIDI ports you will see 'Output: DP Input'. Switch this on for 'Track' and 'Sync'.
  • Now go to the MIDI track 'To' and choose 'DP Input' on channel 1.
  • In Live add an audio track and open the 'configure' dialog for 'Audio From'. For 'Audio Input Device' select Soundflower. Go back to the audio track and choose 'Ext. In' for 'Audio From'.
  • Switch to DP and check that 'Multi Record' is switched on under 'Studio'. Now add a MIDI track and an instrument, let's say Modulo. In the MIDI track input select 'DP Input' channel 1. For Modulo output select 'Soundflower'.
  • Switch to Live, arm the MIDI track and check that Monitor is set to 'In' for the audio track. Play some notes and you should hear the output from DP.
  • If Modulo output is too quiet go to System Preferences -> Sound and select Soundflower. Check that the output volume is high enough then go back to your regular output.
Hope that helps! DP slaved to Live looks like fun but I don't know how it scales for big projects - I just started with Live a few days ago.

Done. It's a little outside the norm for the tips sheet, which has been strictly DP-only up until now, but it made sense to expand our coverage a little for this, which has long been one of those mysterious tasks that only the most motivated accomplish. Nothing wrong with getting DAWs to talk to each other! Thanks for recommending it, RadioGal, and thanks for taking the time to write clear instructions, DubiousMaximus.

Thanks for this info, I'm going to have to try it out next week and see how it works, thanks.
