How to Make Machfive into a Yamaha CS80

Post by KenNickels »

Not the whole thing, of course! Just that piercing bitchin' "string" sound that Vangelis used in Blade Runner. Has anyone tried to do this? What was your methodology, filter choices, etc.?

I've read this
http://www.hollowsun.com/donations/cs80/

but wanted to check the forum first for issues related to M5. Thanks!

Not exactly the answer to your question, but Arturia's virtual CS80 is a-ma-zing.

Kubi, I know of the Arturia libraries, thanks. I want to roll my own here with M5. No need to buy something new, only to tweek that which lays dormant. BTW, I enjoyed your music and it is very powerful and sensual.

I know you said you wanted to create your own, but here are a few options where you can find the Vangelis Blade Runner pad (I take it that's what you mean, from the intro, right?):

- Hollow Sun actually has a Roland VP330 library which nails it. It's only for Kontakt, though.

- UVI has their String Machines package which works with M5-3 straightaway. I don't own it but I'm sure you could find a similar one in there.

Those sounded good, but I did end up writing my own patch. It came out pretty good. In this link I mixed in a little bit of a string sample to give it more realism. But you can hear the extra bite the oscillators give, and the piercing sustain. Machfive is so deep and open that you could probably, if you had enough patience, emulate any architecture, especially if you had some overview or schematic to work from. :D
