Help....my Firewire is not working on my beloved G4!

Post by jfavela »

Hello my name is Joshua
I use a PowerMac G4
w/dual 867mhz
My machine is not detecting any of my firewire peripherals. This began 2 days ago.
I use a MOTU 828mkII on one firewire port
and a LaCie external hard drive on another
When I turn either on, nothing happens!
What can I do to remedy this situation?
HELP

Thank You
Joshua

Try this:

Unplug your firewire gear before you boot up your beloved Gfour.

After booting run Apple'sDiskUtility "REPAIR disk permissions".

Reboot.

After rebooting plug your firewire gear one at a time so that you can see that each one shows up on your desk top as you plug them in.

Let us know here if that suggestion solved your problem.

Boot from the Software Install CD that came with the G4. Open the Disk Utility and determine if the FireWire drive shows up. If it does you probably have a software issue with the installed OS. If it does not, you may have a hardware issue with the FireWire ports. If you have a PCI FireWire card handy, you can use this to troubleshoot the built-in ports.

Do you have any M-Audio stuff that you hot swapped? Some FW devices cannot be hot swapped and will toast your FW circut. It happened to me on a G4 as well. You might try a PCI FW card, but if the FW device is fried, then it has to go back to M_Audio for repair. But they are fast and reliable. They understand the problem and will fix it right. As for the Mac... well, if it's fried it's fried. Hopefully, a PCI card will work or the pther suggestions above.

Thanx all....up and running....

Im up and running again. I don't know exactly what the fix was, but I did the following steps:
Disconnected power cable from MOTU 828 and swithched voltage switch from 110 to 220. That did not work.

Disconnected FW from MOTU then powered up, it worked! But when I re-attached FW cable would not power up properly, it would freeze.
I noticed when I powered up my LaCie FW drive, the icon on my desktop did not pop up.
I re-installed my MOTU software, then popped open my G4 to get a visual on my FW hardware. I touched nothing. Closed her up, then powered up....all is working like normal now. Almost freaked, though. Gotta stay busy in the studio. Thank God.

Thanx 4 all your feedback.
Joshua
