Does anybody know how to pan reverb?
I have this tune that i'm trying to mix and i was told by a MP&E (music production and engineering) friend of mine that the tune could really benefit from panning the reverb on my lead vocal all the way out to the sides and panning the reverb on my guitars into the middle. The problem is that he knows nothing about DP and i've just started learning. IS THIS POSSIBLE...i've tried everything. If someone could help that would be incredible. Thanks a lot.

Insert the reverb plugin on an Aux, Bus a Send on your track to that Aux, and you'll see a panner on the Send. Use that panner to pan to taste. The bus assignment is easily done according to page 678 "Aux track shortcut" which also works for Sends.MikeDMusic wrote:I have this tune that i'm trying to mix and i was told by a MP&E (music production and engineering) friend of mine that the tune could really benefit from panning the reverb on my lead vocal all the way out to the sides and panning the reverb on my guitars into the middle. I disagree.
I've always found that panning the verb away from your guitars is a good thing (when you actually use verb).
But i don't want to be pendantic about this so...
Two verbs, one in mono and one in stereo.
Mono verb: make an aux with a mono-mono verb and assign it bus 1 from your channels. It's mono.
Stereo verb: make a stereo to stereo verb on an aux and send your verb sends to it. that gives you some spread but as i stated earlier I like to pan my verbs away from the pan of the instruments. In that case you can use the pan on the send to send to the opposite side of the verb.
If you really want to take your friends advice to heart M/S processing of the verbs would be in order but that another ball of wax that is rarely used.
FWIW do what sounds good to you not what some schnert on the internet tells you.
PS my assistant would tell you all reverb is bad. He has a point sometimes.

You can also use a trim plugin after the verb on the aux to change it's width in the mix.

It would be nice to see that pan be selectable to follow the main fader pan for true "stereo" reverb panning.
This effect has been around since the CBS simon and Garfunkel days of Roy Halee.
We built a custom API board years ago and from the main pans you could select to two sends for this effect.
having to automate them separately is an extra step but at least doable.

I think that's a great idea. It'd be terrific to have a toggle allowing us to link and unlink main fader pans and insert pans. I'd use that all the time. I'm sure others would as well.Timeline wrote:It would be nice to see that pan be selectable to follow the main fader pan for true "stereo" reverb panning.

creating a stereo aux track
Waves IR1 full sounds awesome on a stereo aux track, even when you don't use surround. But it requires a stereo aux so I use a low cpu plug-in such as auto-pan in a disabled mode (option click till it appears in italics to disable). Creat an aux track, insert auto-pan, disable- the aux track will now allow the insertion of full surround IR1 impulses. They sound awesome! Try it!
Which leads me to the question of why MOTU doesn't have an option to create a stereo aux track to begin with.[/u]

Your declarative statement would be better served if you read the manual.Jeff Isaacs wrote: Which leads me to the question of why MOTU doesn't have an option to create a stereo aux track to begin with.

Re: creating a stereo aux track
Is he wrong? Can you generate a stereo aux buss from a surround channel? As far as I know, you can only generate mono busses from surround channels. Straighten me out. What page in the manual should I refer to?Fibes wrote:Your declarative statement would be better served if you read the manual.Jeff Isaacs wrote: Which leads me to the question of why MOTU doesn't have an option to create a stereo aux track to begin with.
