828mk3/Logic 9 issue, probably newb

Post by rycwdstn »

Hello all, and thanks in advance.

I can input and record signal from the 828 when I connect via the "mic/instr in" 1 & 2 combo jacks on the front panel of the 828. However, when I attempt to record by inputting at the 1/4 inch analog in #3 jack on the back panel of the 828 there is a problem. I see that there is signal into the 828, viewing it both at the front panel meters and also in Cue Mix, but that signal does not appear to be accepted by Logic. I have the "in" for my Logic track set to input 3, and the track is armed to record, but no signal appears in the Logic meters. I see nothing in Cue Mix which would obstruct or enable the analog 3 signal to be output to Logic, nor anything in Logic, aside from designating the track's in, and arming the track for recording, which would prevent Logic from receiving data from 828.

But I must be missing something.

Analog 3 on the 828mk3 would be input 5 in Logic. When you select the input, you should be seeing the 828 name in parentheses next to the input sequence number and you should be seeing the 828 name in the mixer.

Thanks, Naz. I'm not seeing the 828 name in Logic input selections or mixer, although 828 is set as the input and the output device in Logic preferences. Any ideas?

Also, what's the deal with the 828 #3 in = Logic #5 in?

Are you using the most recent version - 9.1.7? What OS? Check your Channel Names in MOTU Audio Setup - are they all blank? There should be a blue text entry next to each white text entry. Another possibility is that you've configured AMS (Audio MIDI Setup) and Logic to use the 828 as an aggregate device.

Logic looks at the inputs sequentially - that's why analog 3 is input 5. You start your count at Mic/Line 1 = input 1, Mic/Line 2 = input 2, Analog 1 = input 3, etc.

NazRat - thanks for the help. I am using Logic 9.1.7 and OS 10.6.8.

I see only white channel names in MOTU Audio Setup. They are not blank, but nothing is in blue.

In the Audio MIDI Setup/MIDI Studio screen, 828 is not present. Should it be?

In Audio MIDI Setup/Audio Devices 828 does appear, with Mic/Instrument as input and Analog as output.

I'm missing something?

I checked the Channel Name theory thing this morning. You have to specifically enter a space to get a blank description or it enters the default name when you exit the field with no entry. And even at that, it shows up in the Logic input selection as what ever input you changed plus ( ), i.e. Input 5 ( ) and just blank on the channel strip itself. In MOTU Channel Names You should be seeing a white text entry and then a blue text entry in the black space to the right, i.e. Analog 3 (white) Analog 3 (blue). That's the way I've been seeing it through as many versions as I remember, so if you don't see that it may be a problem. Maybe try to enter the names and see what you get.

Have you downloaded and installed the most recent drivers from the MOTU site? There may be changes in there that effect Logic channel naming.

The aggregate device theory still holds - that's the way Logic references the inputs when an aggregate is selected.

OTT - give MOTU tech support a call or check over on the Logic support community at Apple. There's probably a few power users over there that have run across stuff like this.

Thanks again, Naz.

It could well be a latest driver issue, as I have never been able to create a MOTU.com account. I can't receive a password confirmation via email, and it is not an email spam filter issue, as MOTU suggests.

I have gathered over at a Logic forum that the lack of specific designation for the 828 within track input field should not be a problem, so long as i follow the sequential track designation, as you suggest.

Now I only need to get proper TRS cable (I hope).

That's weird. I was able to create more than one. I created the second user out of curiosity to see what access I had when I had no products registered. Driver downloads are available to everyone who registers.

It probably is an email spam issue as MOTU suggests or you accidentally gave them one that was incorrect. Do it again.
