Horrible Latency Problem

Post by heyitsjimi »

Hey everybody,
This is a new one for me. I have Total Workstation 2, among a lot of other things IK. I've had it for years and use it in Digital Performer 7.24., on a MacBook Pro. I have my Instrument Libraries on an external Firewire drive, 7200 rpm.
Suddenly I'm getting horrible latency with SampleTank, SampleMoog, SampleTron, ( haven't tried Miroslav) when I play them via MIDI.
It doesn't happen with Sonic Synth. In the DP plugins pull-down, Sonic Synth is an entity on to itself, the rest of the IK stuff is in it's own folder.
When I say horrible, I mean like half a second horrible. It sounds like some kind of weird digital delay or something. To my knowledge, I haven't changed any settings that would cause this. Not saying I'm not capable of hitting something accidentally.
I tried running this stuff in Stand-Alone.... & no problem.
I can be more detailed, but thought I'd just throw this out and see if anybody else has experienced this, plus I'm not with my gear at the moment.

Anybody ?????

Thanks,
jimi

Was your Buffer setting changed, by any chance?

I find that now that my MBP is almost 5 years old, the Sampletron software from IK constantly 'forgets' that it's authorized, and the way it reacts to this, is to cut down the polyphony to 3 voices. I go thru the reauthorization process, as far as getting on line to them, and then they say "this product was already authorized" and give me a previous date, and the correct authorization code. i enter it, and all is well. Until 2 weeks later. I only go into this detail on a seemingly unrelated issue, because it's IK related, and the response of the VI is severely compromised. Also I transfered a Project which was cool on the MBP, to my Intel Tower, and only on this project, Transport response times are also delaying up to 1.5 seconds. Also probably unrelated to your issue, but maybe not.

tommymandel, that really sucks !! How frustrating !. Have you tried contacting IK support ?
It's maddening when things that were working fine, suddenly go haywire for no apparent reason. If your other VIs aren't causing problems, it sure seems like an IK issue and not your MPB. Mine is 2 & 1/2 years old. Since it's a latency problem, it also seems like the problems we are both having could be related.
Here's what I did on my end. I did check the buffer settings as 666 suggested, and then played around with them. No matter what I did, nothing changed. I did a fresh install of DP (or as fresh as I could figure. I didn't have to re-enter my password. I wish there was a DP uninstall somewhere). I also kept repairing permissions along the way.
I then opened the project where I first discovered the problem. I haven't tweeked anything in "Configure Audio System", just left it the way it was upon install.
The latency upon playing a note was gone ..... but VIs keeping playing about 1/2 second when I hit stop, and editing anything on the fly causes the VIs timing to go haywire (not just IK stuff). This started happening the same time as the latency when playing a note, and hasn't gone away. At least I can finish the Bass part I was working on.
Hopefully, somebody with big smarts will pipe in about this one.

Oh... but there is!

Run the installer from the CD or latest updater. When you get to Easy Install, click on the right arrow. You will see another item on the drop-down menu, the Uninstaller.

It removes almost everything except the Authorization file so you are good to go after re-installing DP (nice!).

I keep the 7.24 updater in an "installers" folder as the updater does a full install. This way, when I need it, I run it from my hard drive rather than from the CD - much, much faster this way. It takes about two minutes from start - uninstall - reinstall on my iMac.

A few days ago while trying suggestions from Support, DP forgot where all my plugins were - including the MOTU and Apple plugs. Running the Uninstaller and Easy Install fixed it right up.
