Head Phones Main Out Set up!

My prefered method of using headphones while the girl sleeps is to get up and physically turn off the monitors. Works like a charm but I'm getting tired of it.

I can turn the main knob down as to not get any computer audio at start up. I don't need to set up a bus or whatever for mixing. I just need to be able to turn the mains down and monitor with headphones. If I select phones to main out, if I turn the mains down, the pones goes down too. I've made several selections trying to figure out how to use the phones on numerous occasions but it just doesn't do what I want it to do. And if I make any adjustments, the 896 disappears from the windows profile and I don't get any computer sounds like playing songs in windows media player. It's so frustrating. What do I need to do to use the headphones and not the mains and not crash my computer at the same time? Do I have to set up some sort of a buss or something? Do I need permission from the Pope?
