Reluctantly Upgrading to Lion on Macbook 2GHz Core2Duo

Post by RJ Wade Music »

Hello MOTUNation,

I would like to ask a question about upgrading my MacBook from Leopard to Lion.

I am reluctantly upgrading for the purposes of using iCloud on my iPhone and MacBook. I also want to be sure that in doing so I don't make an error in the proper steps by putting an operating system on top of another without erasing the entire drive and starting anew.

My system is running so smoothly and I would hate to start from scratch. I am currently running Leopard with DP7.24, MachFive 3.03, Melodyne Editor, and Peak Pro 6. I am also using a MOTU 828mkII.

I ordered Snow Leopard yesterday and after the install, I will order Lion and my OS will be completely up-to-date.

What advise can anyone give on:

1. Doing this install properly
2. Guiding me thru (Briefly) to ensure all the named software/hardware runs on Lion
3. ANYTHING I may have missed.

As always I appreciate any and all advise given to me by MOTUNATION.
I would not be where I am without you.

Thank you in advance,

RJ

I've had Lion running on a MacBook like yours and a MBP since the initial release with no problems. In both cases, I just downloaded and ran the Lion install from the App store with no special preparations other than the obvious backup of my own files. There were a few applications that had to be updated to run on Lion, and one or two very old PPC applications that stopped working. If you have any of this sort, just google the name along with "Lion" and you will probably see some report on whether there is an upgrade.

I haven't upgraded a Mini that operates as a media server or my main DP Mac. Both have to do just one thing very well, are working perfectly with SL, would not benefit in any noticeable way from Lion.

bayswater,

Thank you so much for the info. The only down-side to all of this is that I have yet to update to WAVES V8 from version 5. After I get the install up and running with LION, I will get the WAVES installed.

I see that you're using an iMac also. I really can't afford a new one. Any suggestions on an earlier one that would suit my needs.

Thanks again :D

Hard to say without knowing your needs There is a thread on the advantages of a mac pro where the consensus is that a used Mac pro is better than a new imac. The iMac is fine for me but I run it linked to a g5 with a uad card. Would your 828 work on an iMac?

The iMac is fast enough to do most of what I need. One problem is that you can't really used the 27" screen at full res with dp because the fonts are too small. Another is the running something like ozone 5 starts the fans up and it's noticeable because the iMac sits between your monitors
