896 Mk3 and 8Pre Phantom Power
I made what's turning out to be a terrible mistake by using an 896 mk3 and 8Pre setup. Phantom power on the mk3 works almost none of the time and the 8pre is heading the same way. Has anyone experienced this? And has anyone any experience of motu tech support? I would imagine they'd be quite busy if every unit they sell has the uncanny ability to morph into worthless junk as soon as some poor clown like me buys one of them.

Maybe explain what connectors, mics, etc you are using . . . seems like an odd problem. Don't you think there would be pages of complaints if it were common? It is possible though that it's the luck of the draw, but more info would help. If you want to get in touch with MOTU, you might have better luck calling rather than a tech link.

Re: 896 Mk3 and 8Pre Phantom Power
Im trying various condensor mics and numerous different xlr cables in all of the mic inputs on both units. Phantom power may or may not work. It was working yesterday but on previous experience it is entirely possible that today it will not work when i try it. But then i could go back this evening and try again and it will work.
Which is of no use when it comes to planning a session. "Sorry guys, the Motu stuff has decided there's no phantom power today, session's off".

Maybe you have a defective unit (the 896). Is it too late to return it for a replacement?
Then, try the 896 by itself without integrating the 8Pre with it. Also try the 8Pre by itself. Is the phantom power issue present when you try each unit by itself?

May a song always touch you in a possitive way!

Same problem here.
Have to restart the 896 several times to get the phantom power.
Sometimes it takes along time to restart the 896.
