Motu 828 MK3 Windows 7 (64) pops, squeals, crashes, protools

Post by robbinhood »

Hey guys, first post. I have done digging to no avail so i made an account to post this.

I have always experienced some clicks and pops, but never these horrid squeals i get now. Also it seems it squeals then crashes my system sometimes.

Computer:
Windows 7 Ultimate
Latest drivers for motu and computer and all firmware up to date
protools 10.0.1
intel i7 quad core sandy bridge 2600k
one harddrive 720rpm inside computer and a two tb external that has nothing to do with recording atm
16 gigs ram
gigabyte mobo

Protools:
sample buffer at 128 or 256 both get squeals and crashes. cant use 512 without bad latency
only used kontakt and guitar rig tracks...

Im wondering if anyone knows a fix for this apparently very known issue.

thanks in advance. hoping to get this solved.. very embarrassing for my first session with my new computer :(

Hi, welcome.

Yes, you'll likely find success by setting the IEEE 1394 driver to use the legacy driver on the system already.

I've posted about this a lot recently. Search my history if you need to see how.

If your system is crashing, I can stop that from happening easily.

C:\Windows\Mindump

Copy the files in there to any other folder. Zip or rar them. Upload to Rapidshare or similar then paste a link here.

Hey, I actually got it solved by disabling the wireless card. a pain, but it works.

I now reformatted my computer so i can use my new shiny SSD :)
and now my motu makes the computer crash.. upon reading your reply, i remembered that before i also had the firewire driver set on legacy mode. I just changed it again and hopefully it stops it from crashing.

ftr, its only crashing my computer now. just a straight freeze. no more clicks pops or squeels thank the lord -_-

thanks man :)

You're welcome.

Reformat isn't necessary, in case you want to keep your old files/settings. Simply clone the old HDD to the SSD then boot to it. If you previously had IDE mode and now want to use AHCI mode, that's only a simple registry change needed before the bios change. Let me know if you need further help with that.

No, the legacy IEEE 1394 will not cause any crashes.

I'm a bsod expert. I'll easily sort your whole machine out in 2 minutes flat, if you still need. All I need are the crash logs then. They're in C:\Windows\Minidump

Copy the files in there to any other folder then zip or rar them. Upload the zip or rar to Rapidshare.com or similar then paste a link here.

If you have strict freezes with no bsods and no C:\Windows\Minidump folder, then instead, type msinfo32 in the start menu. File | save on the opened screen. Then zip or rar the saved file. Upload and attach that instead.

Your wireless card is very likely Atheros based as most (but not all) are. Here is the place you want to install the driver for it from:

http://www.Atheros.cz

No disabling necessary at all.

i know it wasnt neccesary, but before i got my ipad i had a lot of •••• on this computer when really its only for music production now. So i figured i might as well format. plus i had an HFS+ partition for my old hackintosh... wanted to rid of that too... I just fidgured reformatting was best.

For the record, i already fixed the squeel and crash issue prior to reformatting, which involved disabling wireless AND changing firewire drivers to legacy mode.

Its just that when i reformatted, i forgot to change the firewire driver :) so no more crashes, i did a full 8 hour edit session yesterday and not one hiccup.

I am curious though to what that other driver would solve. as soon as ifigure out which i need, i am going to.. but curious none the less.

thanks again!
