DP 7.24 Crash on opening sequence

Post by ccjones87 »

:banghead:

Hello All,

My first post here, and definitely won't be my last! MY sequence was working fine last night. THEN, I tried to open it today, all virtual instruments and samples (Vienna Symphonic Library, misc. Eastwest samples, and Wallander Brass/Woodwinds) loaded without issue, then as soon as they were finished loading up, DP crashed. I closed all running programs, restarted the computer and still got the same result. Note: DP will open other sequences which has me worried about this one... Any ideas? I'm totally lost here.

You can try using the Load command.

Create a new project and Load it from there. You can select what to load in the dialog box.
This should recreate your full problematic chunk in a new one in this new project. Save As and you should be fine.

Let us know how it goes (there are other options you could try in the rare case this doesn't work).

Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,
Vienna Instruments SUPER PACKAGE, Waves Mercury, slaved iMac and Mac Minis running VEP 7, etc.

Hey FMiguelez,

Thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested and got an error claiming that my hard disk was full (which it isn't), then DP crashed again (so quickly I didn't have time to read the other part of the error!). What other options do I have?

Hmmmm...

The first I'd try is to copy the whole project folder to a different Hard Disk and open it from there (e.g. an extra FW or eSATA drive).

Also, check your disk permissions where this DP project lives. I remember having similar problems once and I solved it by opening the Info window for the HD and set it to Ignore Users (or Ownership).
Also, make sure the permissions are set correctly for the WHOLE drive, not just a folder (there's an option where you can tell OSX to apply the settings to all enclosed items).

Do you have soundbites? If so, you can try to do a Save a Copy As into a different HD. Once it's all copied, try opening it from there.
If this doesn't work, you can delete the audio files and see if it loads this time without them (you can reimport them later or find the culprit one).

You can also try trashing DP's preference file (the .plist one). If you do this be careful not to dump the whole folder (only the mentioned file).
If you don't have a working backup copy of this file (slap in the wrist if you don't) you will have to set your preferences again, though.

Plugins? You can tell DP to ignore the plugins in the preferences, so you can test opening the sequence without them.

If nothing of this works let us know. Some of the other guys will probably chime in and give you more suggestions to try. But I'm cautiously optimistic you will be able to recover this project one way or the other.

+1 - create a new empty sequence, go into preferences, disable all plugins then quit DP and try reopening the sequence.

So, after disabling plug-ins, I was able to get the session open both from an external HD and from the computer itself, but the only instance in which the session didn't crash was when it had been opened from the external HD. Which leaves me wondering how to proceed... I have plenty of MIDI data that needs to be dealt with, would it be feasible to copy said data to a new sequence with the same plugins (that are working perfectly okay with other sequences)?

Well first of all in the sound bites menu "select unused soundbytes" then remove them. Then "save as" and check the copy audio box. So you save the whole sequence as a fresh copy.

Once you open the sequence, disable all the audio and instrument tracks, the little blue dot, and resave. Now you have a sequence you can open and which has the audio/instrument tracks disabled. Now you can re-enable the plugins in the preferences again and see which one causes trouble. There's one in there which is causing this. It could well be one plugin that pushed your system over the 32 bit ram limit (Omnisphere step up and take a bow).....

Good luck

Yes. You should be able to get anything you need wherever you want it (Clippings and Load command are great for this).

But, based on what you've mentioned about your original DP HD, it makes me suspiscious about it. Maybe it's about to die, or there is a permissions issue with it. Did you try both my suggestons about HD ownership and permissions?

Hey All, I ended up just making a new sequence and importing the MIDI data. As soon as this project is done, the old sequence is going in the trash... Thanks for the help!!
