BFD2 and CueMix FX

Post by BlueBrain »

Hi all.

Confused here, would appreciate some sage advice.

Guitar in to channel 1 works fine, but I'm trying to route BFD2 out to monitor through CueMix as well and can't seem to figure out why I can't get it in the mix. I set the output on BFD2 to "Motu Analog 3-4" and the meters on the hardware (896hybrid) for channels 3 & 4 are active, so it looks good so far. In CueMix on the output tab when I set links stereo channel 3-4 to monitor, the drums signal shows up in the output meters on the far right but not in the mixer meter or the main window meter, if I strum the guitar I hear it and see it in all four meters (hardware, mixer slider meter, main window meter, output meter), but can't get the same result with the BFD2 signal. When I set PHONES to monitor channel 3-4 instead of main outs or active mix, then I can hear the drums, but when I've got phones set to active mix or anything other than analog 3-4, can't hear them in the mix.

Here's the confusing thing to me - when I crank up the VRB send on analog 3-4 I can now hear the drums in the reverb, but still can't get them in the main mix.

I find this stuff really confusing. ;) Why does sound have to be so damn complicated?

Thanks for any tips. I've experimented a LOT but am totally stuck.

Set the output of BFD to the same output pair as your guitar (most likely your mains). If that is a problem - what are you trying to accomplish by routing BFD to a different output pair if you want it in the mix with the guitar?

Hi,

Sorry you're having a difficult time with it...

I also have the 896mk3 Hybrid, but I believe the following is true for most of the Motu interfaces and CueMix FX:

Basically, you cannot route any software outputs into CueMix FX (not with current version at least) to be mixed within that software. If you wish to do this you have to do a loopback from your analog outputs into another pair of inputs (not ideal!). Alternatively, if you don't wish to actually use CueMix FX to mix it (which is actually just for mixing the I/O on the hardware itself) you should output the software channels to the outputs you are using for monitoring/main speakers. So, for example, rather than sending BFD2 to the analog outputs 3/4 send it to main outs. If you want to send it to more than one output then you will need to have this supported in software - so, for me, I use the DAW called Sonar X1 which lets me setup multiple sends on a single channel.

Bottom line - you cannot get software inputs into CueMix FX at the moment without using a hardware loopback (and wasting I/O) which is a shame and hopefully will be changed in the future. Instead, you should use your software to handle mixing/routing of software instruments etc.

Hope that helps a little!

Spence.

PS. You can hear the reverb because there is only one reverb channel and it is shared across anything that uses it so if you have stuff being sent to the reverb from the outputs of analog 3/4 and the reverb is being used on the main outs (or routed to the main outs) then you will hear the reverb effect from the analog 3/4 outputs on the main outs...
