Is this normal? I'm wondering if other users experience this, too...

It should be the MAS version you're running in DP, not the Audio Unit.
A 2018 Mac mini with 16 gb of ram

Yes, MAS version. DP scans for AU versions as well...Do you simply mark the AU ver. as invalid?

Marked as invalid...DP loads Mas version.
