Lion isn't that bad. I've been using it for DP on a Macbook Pro, and I haven't had any crashes with it. Yet. This has been going on for all of a week, now. But I don't like the simplification of the OS. My main complaint is that it takes real dedication to use DP in Spaces (or Desktops) in Lion. Spaces was a real timesaver and workflow enhancer in Snow Leopard. But in Lion it is an unfinished trick. At the minimum it needs key commands to go directly to each Space*, rather than having to tap-tap-tap through Control-Arrows. Another complaint is the loss of Rosetta. I get tired of Apple deciding it's time to wean me from my old software. Now I have to buy a new version of Microsoft Office and Adobe Illustrator. I hope that Apple comes to its senses and stops taking away its best features every few years.

That said, the installation and operation of DP in Lion has been fairly easy and smooth. I had to track down the right version of a few pieces of software, but once installed it ran well. In fact, it feels snappier. (really… no joke)

Windows? No way for me. Because I tried Windows in its early versions, it'll always seem like a turd on a shingle masquerading as the main dish. (to quote myself from another thread) I don't care if it's great, now. I like using Macs.

I'm looking forward to 64 bits, and I'd especially like to know what new features DP is going to have.

Shooshie
*my workaround: use DP's commands for opening its various windows, and it will take you to the space where the window is residing, already opened. For some reason, that doesn't work 100% of the time, but probably 98% of the time it does.

I wonder if the new 64 bit DP will be able to run 32 bit VI's and plugs somehow? I think it was Logic had that "bridge" thingy, so It can theoretically be done..

I have the Korg Legacy stuff that I use all the time, and Korg apparently has no intention of porting it over to 64 bit. :? I might have some other 32 bit only things in here too, but haven't gone over it all yet.

Could you NAMM goers ask that question at the MOTU booth?

I use Korg Wavestation and M1 VIs from time to time and I am always booted in 64. No issues whatsoever.

Same here, but the question is whether it will work when DP itself is running in 64 bit mode.

It runs fine in Plogue Bidule when it is running in 64 bit - feeding DP. I don't think that is an issue.

I was at NAMM yesterday and saw the first MOTU demo of the show. Talked to
Magic Dave right before that. He was like a kid at Christmas, he was so excited.

Here's what I definitely learned:

DP8 will run in 10.6.x and Lion. Don't know whether it runs in Leopard.
On Windows machines, it will definitely run in Windows7. Don't know about
XP (my guess is not).

No indication of VST implementation in the Mac version of DP8. VST for the
Windows version is definitely there (and has to be, since that's the primary
plug-in/VI platform for Windows). Note: I can't think of any plug-ins or VI's that are Mac and VST only. Maybe some Steinberg ones but who cares about that. I don't see VST for the Mac version as an issue.

No indication of whether MAS will be dropped for DP8. As you can see with Mach Five 3, there is no MAS version of that, so you can draw your own conclusions from that.

There are around 15 new plug-ins, most of them guitar-oriented (stompboxes, new amps, a new "mini" cabinet simulator with less microphones, a new hi-quality chorus, a de-esser).

The new "punch guard" feature is cool. Even when you punch in on the fly, or
define a point to punch in, DP8 starts recording before the point where you
punched in, and after you punch out. So if, for example, you are recording
a live band and you stop recording when you think the song is done, but the
drummer does some extra bashing after the band stops, not to worry - that
"extra" recording you think you missed is actually there.

The 64-bit implementation is really for taking advantage of all of your Mac's memory...translation, for large sample libraries.

A number of features related to video have been added but...ummm...I don't do video with DP so I didn't pay attention. Sorry.

The development of DP8 for Windows means MOTU is looking to expand to that
market. I really don't think it's coming at the expense of Mac development.
DP8 has obviously been in development for some time. The Windows and Mac
versions have both been attended to equally during that development phase.

And finally, when I dropped by the Steinberg booth and told them that DP was
going to work in Windows, I noted some very worrisome looks. Boo-yah!

Hi David (or Anyone):

Any word on when DP8 will release? Is it ready now or is this just a "preview"?

Is this a rebuild from the ground up? (Obviously, the Windoze version is, but I suspect they may have retooled the whole thing so they will be able to develop and update both platforms at once.)

Will DP8 now require an iLok (like MOTUs other cross-platform apps)?

Will DP8 continue to offer a paper manual?

Thanx,
Babz
