Problems installing 4.52

Post by beverins »

Greetings! I have been tasked with installing a new Mac G5 running Panther into an existing digital audio setup that uses Digital Performer. The latest I have is 4.52. The Mac G5 is a dal processor, 1.5gb ram. The system partition is formatted as a Unix file system, if that matters.

Basically, the problem is that I install the original disk into the machine, set it to install... it goes fine until it reaches DAE. Usually at "items left 444" or "items left 435" and then it freezes. I left it on overnight, in case the install was a slow process (even though I know it shouldn't be the case), and it was still there the next morning. Repeated tries (now 10 tries, 5 times with a fresh reformatted install of Panther with DP being the first thing installed) get exactly the same results.

I thought it was a bum disk, but I ordered two copies for the labs here and both CDs do this.

Any hints? Should I reformat and install the OS again and put in the hardware drivers first? Should the Mac be attached to the audio hardware (at present, its by itself, not attached to anything save the monitor and the power outlet..) before I install? Should I install Pro Tools 6.0 first?

MOTU's website is no help, though I shall try emailing them to see what they say - just wanted to know if anyone here has had this problem.

I did my initial install off the DP 4.5 disk which worked great. I then updated to 4.52 with an updater on the site. Not sure if your disk is bad.

I remember hearing someone say copy the installer and the supporting files to your drive and run it from there.
Give that a try and see what happens.

Ooohh, I just reread your post and saw that you have your system drive formatted as UNIX filesystem. I would imagine that would have an impact on installers that are expecting a target drive of HFS+. Is the location you are installing DP on the UNIX formatted drive or a different partition?

Also, lot's of preferences and extensions (like DAE) are located in the system folder, regardless of where DP is installed...

Did you check mOTU's tech info library for info on UNIX formatted system drives?

Checking their tech database revealed nothing for Unix other than a mention of MachFive. Its a possibility, though, so if I can't get it to work I'll reformat with HFS Journaled and see if that does the trick or not.

Confirmed. DP 4.52 does not install on a UNIX formatted OS X installation. You'd think that would be a basic help document on MOTU's website, but I was unable to locate it.

Anyway, now on to the REST of the installation. *sigh* Thanks for the help!

Some of the early 4.52 CD R's from MOTU were either damaged or contained a 'less compatible' version of the 4.52 update.

There were some problems with a corrupted version of DP being installed and upon any transport activity, the system would crash.

Don't know if this is related at all to your experience, but the solution (which i think may have been stated above) is to NOT use a install CD from MOTU, but to download the 4.52 update from the MOTU site and install THAT:

Good luck!

..and of course following the actual instructions, which work well actually.

Why?
There's no apps (that I'm aware of, including Apples own)
that even support a Unix formatted installation.
Final Cut doesn't mention, neither does Soundtrack or Motion for that
matter.

Followed the MOTU guidelines, but my disc installs never worked. ONLY the downloaded version of the updater would work. I struggled with this MANY times over a period of about a week. Clearly, they are different files OR the CDR is damaged, but I still think they are different versions. Never checked the file sizes, but I bet they're different.

Well I guess things are different from person to person.
Worked fine for me.

I suspect that it may also be attributable to my Sonnet 1.4 gHz processor upgrade. I know it was the cause of problems in Fax STF in that the processor (according to Smith Micro) was 'too fast' for the program. Clearly, this is not the case with DP, but perhaps the processor/DP Original version 4.52 and/ Tiger WERE not compatible for some reason. Then there are RAM consideration, yadda yadda yadda. But what's important is that, in the end, DP DOES work with Tiger. Grrrr!
