The dreaded stuck and dropped notes problem revisited

Frodo, could it all be a faulty MIDI unit and/or cable? Is there a way you could borrow a MTPAV and cables from someone who you know is not having these issues? That woul be an invaluable test to make. It would tell you so much.

Not at all. Those are typical hobbit fixes right out of the gate. In fact, this MTPAV is my second of the latest model. I bought the new one because I thought the older one was defective when drivers didn't solve the problem. This is my second USB MTPAV in the past four years or so.

Cables? I've got two drawers full of new MIDI cables that get swapped when needed. At present, I only have a single keyboard controller and no other externals. The puzzlement is playback which doesn't involve external devices. The real question is how much the driver and the hardware effect the ITB-VI behavior. If the driver is handling the interface and if the driver is not involved in VI playback... ???

If you lived in this city I'd drive to your place and lend you mine for a week...

Man-- if we lived within driving distance, we'd be doing the best beer and cuisine affordable, going to sports events, and laughing our faces off, I guarantee.

Why squander good Fellowship on MIDI glitches? Life is too short.

I'm another using an MTPA/V USB who gets, maybe, one or two stuck notes a year, usually because I was jamming the program with command data. I've been using this interface through 3 Macs and many versions of DP without incident.

I have to ask: why would your choice of MIDI interface improve response on VIs? Doesn't all that happen internally?

That I have no idea. I try to check myself to make sure it isn't me in these odd instances. But after playing around quite a bit, triggering VI's with the MidiSport seems to be ever so slightly more responsive. Have no idea why.

Equally interesting would be to know how many have the MTPAV without stuck notes.

No stuck notes. Using two MTP A/V's.
I had some stuck notes. But that only happened when the batteries were running low.

Hey guys,
i've read alot of the posts on this forum, but i've never posted on here before.

I actually had this problem a few days ago too..
My MIDI notes started stammering/stuttering randomly, and when i tried dragging the playhead back it would also leave trails and random triggers of my samples..

It got me really pissed off with it, but couldn't find a solution. I was about to switch over to another DAW for good.. because other DAWs that i'd been using did not have this problem.

Then i discovered that on the VE Pro website, it talked about various DP compatibility issues, and one in particular was this one and it solved my problems immediately:



If you change the settings under "Plug-in Real Time Preferences" to
"All Plug-ins in Real Time", you should be all set. This caused all that stuttering/random re-triggering to stop immediately, and I could use DP again. =)

Let me know if this helps. I never had this problem until i upgraded to Lion.

Thanks for the tip, but some of us have had to run VIs and plugs in real time ever since the feature was implemented and we still encounter the issue on occasion.

This used to be a huge issue for me as well. I thought it had finally gone away with DP7, but I had a rash of stuck notes the other day out of the clear blue while using Gigastudio. The sticking notes seemed to be emanating from the Gigastudio MIDI tracks, and the situation occurred after a hour or so of use. I shut the thing down and went home. The next day when I started up the same sequence I had no problems. But, after a period of use, I got a stuck note here and there. So I'm thinking this might be some sort of memory issue. Or maybe it's just the weather in Santa Clarita? Whatever, it's just baffling.

I'll try to monitor this situation more closely and report if this comes up again.

I hope MOTU comes up with a patch soon too. The Micro Lite is what I was going to buy to replace my MTP/AV, but it's back ordered til March, according to Guitar Center. My 30 day return period is up for the M-Audio 4x4 I'm using in the meantime.

I'm off to channel the MIDI/USB/OS/stuck note spirits. Hopefully I can convince them we don't all have money to burn on extra interfaces we shouldn't have to buy.

Thank you for posting this solution. I just started encountering some ugly stuttering and sample triggering after several months of a trouble-free VEP and DP7.24 setup on Snow Leopard. It probably happened when I trashed the DP plist to solve another issue but I hadn't considered checking the plug-in setting until I found your post.

Knock on wood, but I'm back up and running smoothly again.

I suffered badly from stuck note syndrome some time ago and ultimately discovered that the problem wasn't with my MIDI gear or software at all but rather the culpret was a cheap USB hub. Whenever there was qwerty keyboard or mouse action (both USB through that hub), the hub would get overloaded and drop note-off messages en route to my MTP/AV. Presto, stuck notes! All I did was replace the usb hub with some in-chassis USB support (a couple of PCI cards) and the problem went quickly and permenantly away. This may not apply directly to your case, but I didn't even think to question the hub as "something new" between a previously working system and a sometimes-wonky system, but indeed that was exactly it.

(Apologies if this has already been recently covered - I came on to the forum for something else and noticed stuck-notes was active; I did not have time to read the whole thread. I figured you'd excuse me if I was repeating someone else and thank me if it was helpful and ignore me if it was not
