Using CueMix FX and an 896 in a live situation?

Post by 21stcenturykid »

Hi all,

As the title says I'm looking into using an 896mk3 hybrid and cuemix (+ an 8pre or something like or 2 8in XLR pre's for even more ins) for live work. I run a wedding band that's predominantly a 4 piece band (guitar/voc, keys/guitar/voc, bass and drums) but we go out as up to an 11 piece with horns and it's happening more frequently and my old Soundcraft spirit m12 hasn't got the ins or auxes to cope with anywhere near that many instruments. So my first option is to get a A&H Mixwiz 16:2. That will give me enough channels and auxes of course. I also have been looking at the studiolive but that Is well out of my price range, which is how I came to look at CueMix as an alternative.

Because it seems to me that CueMix can work effectively the same as a studiolive. ie saved mixes with effects and monitors mixes already done ready to go at every gig, which would be a huge time saver when we often have to set up within 60minutes on most occasions and any way to reduce this setup time would be massively useful.

So the question is... does anyone use Cuemix in a live situation like this? How well does it work? reliability issues in comparison to using a mixer?

Obviously you can't just grab a fader or pot mid gig to change something but as I run FOH from stage I rarely do this. Once I get a mix I'm happy with I leave it as it is all gig. The audience won't notice the subtle differences anyway.
If i did want to change anything mid gig all i would have to do is plug in my MBP and connect an iPad (or my iphone) to its internal wifi and run a mirror app and I could walk round the room making any adjustments i wanted. Even hand the iPad to the band so they could do their own monitor mixes! (as you can with a studiolive)

It's also £70 cheaper to buy the 896 than a mixwiz in the UK (already have a focusrite pro26i/o and an octopre i could use for extra ins till I can afford something with better pre's) and it would allow me to record every gig so I could produce live promo tracks from each gig if I wanted to.

I guess I'm just after confirmation that it would work the way I describe!

Cheers in advance!

I'm using 896mk3 and Adat pres since over 2 years... for liveshow mixing and recording.
Cuemix FX is bullet proof.

but...
When I started to use iTunes alongside Cuemix FX and routed iTunes also out the 896mk3, doing anything in Cuemix FX resulted in hickups of iTunes...
unusable.

I then went the route of using Cuemix FX for monitors and adding DP and using it for FOH ( DP taps into the 896mk3 monitoring / hardware playthru ).

But....
there is a level bug :

I also discovered lately an issue with TALdub3 ( tap delay ) and the developeer is aware of it...
otherwise fine, see my page on livemixing with MotU...

I'm tempted by the new 896mk3 Hybrid, but it wants a new driver and then takes over 10 sec to load a preset from computer...
tech link pending...
( the original 896mk3 loads in 4-5 sec a complete preset. )

Best

That might be something I'd want to do but it wouldn't be a hardship to use a pair of inputs for iTunes. We send a stereo pair from a separate mac for using Logics Mainstage anyway. So I'd just need to transfer my itunes library to that mac to sort that out

Does this work well minus the DP element of the equation? for example just using cuemix for the masters/monitors and all FX. I don't really need to go the route of using DP for FX at all. Unless I'm taking the MacPro with me and can use my UAD plugs! Which would be totally unnecessary on all counts I think

I assume loading presets is not really an issue if, like me, I was using it for only my band and therefore never really changing presets once I had it set like I wanted?
