Re: Lion-- things to know
Thanks bayswater. That's exactly what I needed to know.
Why update? There's a few cool things that'd be nice to have, but mainly it's because I've somehow become a Mac guru to my family and to many of my (more technology-challenged) friends and I'd like to know what they're talking about. Also, since Lion ain't going away I figure I might as well. With these questions answered I can think of no reason not to. …can you?

I haven't updated my main setup to Lion, and won't until I've checked that all the plugins I want to use will work without an expensive and time consuming round of updates. That's the only reason.

Re: Lion-- things to know
Right! I'm in no hurry to mess with my main rig (and livelihood!) which is super solid. It's very possible that it will remain with SL permanently. I may end up needing a new desktop before I "need" to update to Lion.

So as long as my machine and software are running smoothly in SL (which they are) then there is no real reason for Lion except the eye candy?
I'm stating put too!

Re: Lion-- things to know
I had my reasons to update to Lion and I am glad that I did. None of them have to do with DP, however.
A lot does have to do with my handicap so there it is.
Besides music, I write and now can work on the same document whether it's from my iPad, laptop or iMac. I work from different locations during the day as no chair is comfortable for more than a few hours. This allows me to pause, go to a different room and continue on a different device. Way cool.
The other main thing is the way that the Magic Trackpad functions in 10.7. My day gig requires me to keep multiple screens and databases open and, in Lion, I can work much faster than before.
If DP is your main application, I see no reason to go to 10.7, however.
Certain other programs I use such as Encore work differently. It does work in 10.7 but its bugs are easier to work around in 10.6 - even better in 10.5 (the current version no longer works in 10.4). I would never recommend Encore to anyone looking for their first notation program but, for my wife and I, it's the fastest way to do lead sheets, down and dirty choral arrangements etc.
SmartScoreX is something else that hasn't worked properly since 10.5. Frankly, the developers should be ashamed for still charging money but not updating the program to work as advertised in 10.6 and 10.7 or even letting buyers know this. This is one of the reasons I kept my G4.

Dirty ch-oral arrangements? I love to see some of those!
There once was a young man from Bell,
Who thought that the OS was hell,
He quickly jumped ship,
Which he thought was so hip,
But since then nothing's gone well.

Re: Lion-- things to know
I usually do the same, as long as everything is running I stay on the same OS as long as possible, but I had some time off between projects and decided it was time for me to move up, upgraded everything and bought some new software, and now plan to stay at 10.7.2 for a very long time.. lolMIDI Life Crisis wrote:So as long as my machine and software are running smoothly in SL (which they are) then there is no real reason for Lion except the eye candy?
