HD Partition Question

I just got a new MacBook Pro, and it has a 750GB hard drive. Should I partition the hard drive to give me 2 smaller partitions? Will that give me any advantages or is it just a waste of time. I remember years ago, when larger drives started to come out (and by larger I mean 100GB), there was a train of thought that partitioning the drive gave you better performance. Is that (still) true?

No and never was... it's easier for a drive to write anywhere it wants instead to a specific area (partition) of the drive... you don't want to use partitions for high performance applications. Reading from 2 separate drive mechanisms will be faster than reading off one drive that's partitioned in two.

Except... if you are doing a lot of audio or video, or other work where you will be writing a lot of temp files or projects you will be archiving or otherwise deleting fairly often on the internal drive, it may be beneficial to have a separate partition you can wipe from time to time and leave boot and app sectors untouched. No?

If you will use the same HD for system and Audio, I do not recommend you partition it.

I only recommend partitioning HDs when you use more than one (as you should).
As MLC mentions, having a 2nd HD (for DP) with partition dedicated to audio/video is desirable, as long as it is the FIRST partition on the HD (it's the fastest one). This way it's a breeze to maintain the disk.
