Trying to use Motu 828 firewire Optical input! Please help!

I have an Aphex 230 Master Voice Channel and Im going into my 828 Firewire, for some reason, if I use an XLR out of the aphex its all distorted even my other presonus preamp was doing that. I was told to try and go from My mic to my Aphex in XLR (Obviously) then to come out digitally. I had an optical wire laying around and when I tried to use it I realized I couldnt figure out the settings in DP7 To bring it up..how do I get the input for my optical in, All I see is s/pdif 1 & 2, I dont understand Why its distorting with xlr Is there some weird setting in my setup thats making it distort or could it be my wire?

can't help you with your distortion, but as for setting up your inputs:

Are you talking about ADAT lightpipe, or optical on the mac? If it's lightpipe, then what I do on my 2408's and 8282's are:

Go to applications and open PCI audio set-up.
choose the bank (e.g. bank A) that your optical cable is coming out of. On the pull-down menu it gives you a choice of ADAT/TDIF/Analog. select ADAT. then check the boxes for the number of outputs/inputs that you want. Makes ure your clock settings are correct and then you're good to go.

In DP, then just create a new audio channel with these inputs. (e.g. 2408 A:ADAT 1-2)
