Pop Sample Libraries

Post by spencer4t »

I feel like its been a while since I've posted here....good to be back. Anyway, I was just curious if anyone here has some suggestions for some sound libraries that would lend themselves well to pop music...ie Maroon 5, Lady Gaga...etc. I imagine I could manipulate sound libraries I have but just curious if anyone has found some they really enjoy. Thanks for your help!

There is no such thing as a "pop sound" or any other genre of
sound. There are only contexts within which sounds are used.
For example, a Fender Strat guitar doesn't "know" it is supposed to be
a rock, country, or funk guitar...it just goes on being a guitar.
Rock, funk, and country are genres with their own associated styles.

That said, a collection of sounds for Renaissance music would include
the instruments associated with that music - plucked harps, mandolins,
fiddles, harpsichords, flutes, etc.

When you say "pop" - that means "popular" and that covers a huge range of genres, from hard rock and metal to country to hip-hop to rap. I suggest you start with band styles, at least. "Pop" is too vague a term.

There are definitely plenty of sample libraries that cover different genres.
Maroon 5 would be "modern rock", Lady Gaga would be dance/electro-pop. See
if you can further narrow your genres.

Yeah, I definitely see what you're saying. I guess I should have said, for those of you who tend to work in say the pop music field....are there sound libraries you find yourself going to on a regular basis?

Judging from your signature, you already have plenty of sound sources for
pop music production. I see you have a Motif XS and Motif ES - are you aware
of motifator.com, the website that has a "Shop" featuring voice libraries for
your Motifs?

Personally, these are my go-to VI's:
drums - BFD2
bass - Trilian
organ - Native Instruments B4II
guitars - Vir2 Electri6ity
acoustic guitars - Pettinhouse, also my own "Acoustic Guitar" library for
the Yamaha Motif XS/XF.
Synths - Arturia MinimoogV, Omnisphere, Yamaha Motif XF, Dave Smith Prophet 08, Roland V-synth version 2, Korg M361, Native Instruments Absynth 5, Reaktor 5, Massive.

That's awesome, thanks for your help...I'm glad to see you use Vir2 Electri6ity...what do you think of it? I have always wanted to know first hand what people really think of it....I've been contemplating buying it for some time!

Anything in my list of "go-to"s I consider to be great, otherwise they wouldn't be in my list. Including Electri6ity.

BTW, I just found out quite recently that NI's Massive was primarily programmed by Soniccouture, who produce some of the greatest individual sample libraries in the industry and whose main guy worked with Dave as one of Yamaha's chief voice programmers for the MOTIF series.
