Hard Drive Icons gone missing!

Post by darrell »

Hi all,

After a DP session yesterday 2 of my 4 external FIREWIRE hard drive icons have gone missing from the desktop. I've chased down cables, connected each individually to my MacbookPro, re-arranged their cables (they're daisy-chained to the laptop), and et cetera.

I know the macbook is seeing them (somewhat) because Disk Utility will scan them for problems (although the permissions button is greyed out), but won't mount them because they are 'not there.'

Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed!

Perhaps your Finder Preferences got messed up.

Have you tried opening those Preferences and check the External Disks under "Show These Items On The Desktop" option?

No, that didn't work, but thanks for the advice! I'm afraid it may be something a bit worse.

Perhaps the drive has somehow been marked invisible. There are a number of utilities that will allow you to toggle drive visibility. I use Onyx. Under Utilities/Visibility you will find a setting that will change the visibility of a drive, file, or folder. Hope this helps.

Disk Utility is where I would start. You can use it to unmount, then mount the drive. Sometimes that's all you need.

I hope some of the simple solutions work. I have had to use utilities to recover the data completely, re-format and restore to fix this - after Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro 5 all declared the problem fixed.

Have you tried each drive individually rather than daisy chained? I agree with starting with Disk Utility. Also a 3rd party program I've had incredible success with in fixing similar problems is Disk Warrior.

Finder>Preferences>General under "Show these items on the Desktop" are "Hard Disks" and "External Disks" checked?

Thank you all for your suggestions!! Bought Disk Warrior and all is well. $99 and an hour's work sure beats days of frustration. :D
