AudioMIDI setup
I know AudioMIDI Setup is supposed to be so much easier than OMS but I find it utterly confusing.
My Motif shows up in the top row, but won't show patch info in DP. When I add a SECOND Motif (via add device), it shows up in the bottom row and DP can display patch info. But now I have two Motif 7's in DP's device list. What's the difference between the top row and the bottom row and why do I have to have one of each for each keyboard I own?
I'm sure it's just me. Can anybody help an old fart out?

Re: AudioMIDI setup
Please include your equip list and software versions which allows anybody willing to answer
a question a better pic of your setup. Control panel>edit signature
To differentiate your 2 Motifs… in AM setup, add a device for each machine. Label one
Motif 7 a. and the other Motif 7 b. as one example in the 'Device Name' at the top of the page when you click the device icon that you created for each keyboard.
If you are using a MIDI interface and connecting the keyboards via MIDI cables be sure and connect each device to the MIDI interface icon by click and dragging the small triangles on the MIDI interface icon to each device icon. Down triangle to down triangle , up triang to up triang and have both physical MIDI cables connected. I have never heard the term upper row and bottom row in reference to AM setup. Alternately, if you are connecting the keyboards via usb cables straight to the computer , I'm unaware of how that is setup in AM setup as I use a MIDI interface. sorry !
The confusion with AM setup is Apple's design as they took over that task and made it a part of the system software when they switched to OS X. … and to the extent of my knowledge, that means each device connected must have it's own patch lists even if you have identical devices. I have never heard of identical devices sharing one patch list, though I could be wrong and someone, somewhere, has been able to make that happen. Hope this helps - Schweats (this is covered on pages 184-5 in the DP 7 manual)

I don't have two. What happens is when I plug the USB from the Motif into the computer it shows up on the top row of AudioMIDI Setup. It's as if it thinks that the Motif is a MIDI interface or something. If I actually want to use the Motif as a controller I have to add a device and call it a Motif which gives me two Motifs. How do I just get the one Motif on the bottom row?To differentiate your 2 Motifs… in AM setup, add a device for each machine. Label one
Motif 7 a. and the other Motif 7 b.
Thanks,
Theo

Re: AudioMIDI setup
Sorry , I'm not getting what you mean by 'top row' & 'bottom row'
Could you open your AM setup and have it the only window open then hit
shift+command+3 simultaneously … this will create a jpeg snapshot of that which is on your desktop and it will show up on your desktop. Include in your reply and perhaps we can get a
better idea of what you mean.

Re: AudioMIDI setup

Top row comes up automatically, bottom row I added because only bottom row can access midnam files.
All devices are connected via USB MIDI. I'm suspecting that is part of the problem.

Re: AudioMIDI setup
OK, Click and drag one of the little black triangles on your top row of the Yama Motif ES…
connect the down arrow on the top row to down arrow on the Motif ES icon on the bottom row - up arrow to up arrow. If the Roland VK7 is connected via USB also , connect it's top row icon to the bottom row similarly.
Click on the bottom row Motif ES to open it. Upon opening it should default to showing the 'properties'…
click on each MIDI channel icon in the inputs row and outputs row , so all are available. Additionally, click the 'MIDI beat clock' button toggling that function on for both input and output
Now, open DP. Open new file , add 2 or more MIDI tracks for the Motif and 1 MIDI track for the VK7.
Open the studio menu and toggle 'On' Multi Record. Back to Tracks Overview window…
When choosing the input/output for each track , you should have a window open with choices as to which MIDI channel you want on what device. Choose one… 1st Motif track > choose Motif ES1-1 , etc. etc.
Repeat the same process for the VK-7 . I find it handy to create a template file with 16 MIDI tracks for each keyboard , already assigned with inputs and outputs and put all tracks inside a tracks folder and label the folder the device's name. Maybe this will work for you. I'm guessing you're using the Motif as your device to play the parts in to each MIDI track, correct ? If so, remember to go to the global mode or
whatever the name is on the Motif and toggle the 'local control' function off if you are recording on Trk 1 MIDI channel 1 in DP and the same in your Motif. If you don't , you'll get a MIDI feedback loop and nothing will record and sound right on playback - if you weren't already aware of this.
Now, if this connection method does not work, I see you have an 828 mk2 in your setup. Unplug the USB cable that connects the Motif from the computer. GO to AudioMidi setup and disconnect the software connections you made between the top & bottom row Motif icons. Make the software connection between the 828 and the Motif. Next, get out 2 MIDI cables and physically connect the Motif to the 828's MIDI connectors. However, the Motif 'in' should connect to the 828 MIDI 'out' and the opposite with the other cable as opposed to the USB software connection's down triangle to down triangle etc. Everything else should be the same inside DP. Unfortunately , the 828 only has 1 pair of MIDI connectors on the backside , so your VK-7 will have to sit things out or you'll have to physically move the connectors when you want to record MIDI tracks with the VK. (Or , you could run a 3rd MIDI cable from the Motif MIDI 'Thru' connector to the VK-7 MIDI in and play the parts you want the VK7 to play from the Motif)
It's been awhile since I've done things like that and I'll have to get the books out, so don't quote me. Lastly, I'd come over and kick ya to get ya started but I don't know where ya live…
I hope this helps - Schweats

Re: AudioMIDI setup
Schweats, thanks for the reply. I'm not ignoring you, I've just sent my console for repair and don't have a studio at the moment. I'll try your suggestion when I'm up.
