M5v3 on a MacPro1,1?

Post by FutureLegends »

Hey!
I've finally got my filthy hands on a little cash, thinking of upgrading to M5v3.
Has anyone used it on a MacPro 1,1? (see my signature) or similar Mac? What's the CPU hit like?
I'm currently using about three instances of PLAY with 6-7 instuments loaded in each) and EZDrummer. It gets a bit heavy pretty soon. It seems like mostly an CPU issue rather than RAM.
I believe I would use one of the basses + maybe the guitar and/or piano from M5v3 in addition to that. I'm just worried this will be too much for my computer and then the upgrade will be in vain...
Any experiences/suggestions are welcome! Also opinions on the included sounds (bass, upright, piano) are most welcome!

Thanks

DZ

My impression is that even with 12 GB of RAM, the cpu hit is a bit heavy compared to K4.

I posted a question elsewhere here about the streaming preferences but haven't received a reply.

At an I/O of 128 for tracking MIDI, with just a single instance of M5v3 with Star drums, a J Bass, and the Mark79 my cpu indicator was clipping in Logic. Using a larger host I/O buffer setting eases the strain.

I'll test with DP 7.2.4 soon and will offer up my observations of the how various streaming preference settings impact cpu stress.

M5v3 certainly has a classy design and is very smooth to operate.

I went ahead and bought it. I most probably will only use it with 1-4 parts loaded... It seemed not so hard on the CPU with that. However I'm using some PLAY instances already and have real problems getting the buffer down to useful levels... Have to keep it at 512 most of the time, which obviously makes playing rythmical parts impossible :(

I try to use the lowest possible I/O because my controller is a MIDI guitar which has it's own latency issues.

Perhaps trigger the MIDI notes for your percussive parts with a cpu friendly instrument, then switch to M5. Having said that, running an I/O of 512 for tracking percussive parts is... ridiculous. Hopefully MOTU will increase cpu efficiency in future updates.

As mentioned before, I'll post impressions of the various streaming preferences and also use of multiple instances of M5 with a few instruments vs one instance loaded with many parts.

Perhaps you could post your observations when time allows.

Well, i didn't notice much change when adding an instance of M5. It's more VIs in general.
Can't understand what's so heard making it possible to run at 1024 buffer and then only the active/record enabled VI runs at low buffer to improve latency.
Thing is also, if I change the hardware buffer ALL the samples of PLAY reloads... taking quite some time. So switching back and forth between buffer settings is not an option... This stuff is really killing creativity...

Hopefully MOTU will make a 64-bit version of DP available soon.
Looks like Plogue Bidule or similar is gonna be needed to run M5v3 with DP7.2.4
I posted some findings here: http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtop ... =5&t=48025" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
