"service battery, battery is charged" message

Post by Nibiru »

Hello all!

In changing some setting in the Energy prefs the other day, I noticed the message, "service battery, battery is charged".  I'm on a March 2008 MBP 2.6.

I did some googling, as ya do, and found some articles/message boards regarding this message.  Some think SL has a bug that makes this message appear, some think SL caused some makes and models of batteries, to over tax the battery, causing it to die prematurely. I have noticed my fans are running more and faster, with not much taxation on the CPU. I've calibrated the battery, which made the message go away for a day. Then it came back. I must admit, I was never in the habit of calibrating my battery thru the years. It's pretty much always been plugged into the power adapter.

Anyone here at the Nation have any experience with this?  Any help is greatly appreciated!

When you say "thru the years", how many years? The battery doesn't last forever, even if you don't use. Maybe the message is a roundabout way of saying that it is charged, but still isn't working. Have look at Coconut Battery http://www.coconut-flavour.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This will tell you how much power your battery can store at full charge, compared to what it could do when it was new, how many charging cycles it has been through, the current charge level, etc. When the first number drops significantly, Mac OS will start telling you to fix or replace your battery.

That's the calibration process, which he already did.

I have a 2008 MBP 2.4 The battery turned bad and apparently was a failing common that year. I took it in last year, and they tried to zap the PRAM but it turns out the battery was just toast. The new batteries fro apple are ridiculously overpriced (IMHO) but I bought an after market battery and all is well again.

Hate to say it, but yer battery is probably done.

Yeah, but this is something that must be done regularly, not like one time. Leaving a laptop connected to a power adapter all the time will damage the battery and shorten its usage life.

Say, where do you get one of these batteries?

Thanks for the replies!

I ended up buying a new battery last night for $130. I'll be following the rules of battery maintenance this time around. Hopefully this will keep my MBP running at normal temps, keeping the fan from coming on so much. Thanks again for everyone's input. I do appreciate it very much!

Sorry Ian--I've been away for a bit.

My battery was around $50.00 and it arrived over night from Vancouver. Not sure how US shipping would work for you, but good luck. I've had the battery for a year and it's workin' fine. The original Apple battery didn't even go a year before the trubs started.
