Cuefix - Main out monitor button - extremely loud!

Post by peachfart »

Hey i recently got a pair of Mackie mr5's hooked up to my ultralite.
i was mixing really late at night and was just playing around in the cuefix - main out channel.
at the bottom there are 3 buttons. monitor, talk, listen. when i clicked monitor, the speakers went EXTREMELY loud and freaked the hell out of me. does anyone know why this happened?
pressing one button increased the volume by about 10 fold. it was really scary. i want to understand what exactly happened before i do this again and damage the monitors. this just makes me feel i dont have full control over the volume...
thanks

Could be you double clicked and set it to the default output level ?

I believe it's the same as my Traveler. When any output has 'monitor' selected you are actually controlling it's output level with the small monitor level knob, top right corner of the cuemixfx screen, as well as the output fader in the mixes tab or outputs tab can't remember offhand. If you change the monitor selection to some other output, the previously selected output will revert to it's actual fader setting, which is probably unity. Been there Ouch!

nah it wasn't any double clicking. only clicked once on the monitor button.

from what mbejackson said...do i lower output fader in the mixes tab?

basically i just to prevent the monitors from suddenly reaching these distressingly painful levels when i press this button. if i dont click the monitor button then it will be avoided but isnt there a more secure measure i can take?

could it be a firmware issue?

also, i cannot get my headphones to play independently to the main outs. the only way is if i turn off my mackies. but i can see that being a real annoyance. could this also be a firmware issue?

im still on 1.0 and havent updated it....

Not a firmware issue. It's how it works. Believe me, you did set it to the default level. Everyone does it, but usually only once. With powered monitors you really need some sort of level control between the outputs and the monitors.

after reading more about this issue, i think by turning off that monitor button off, my mackie mr5 monitors will play at their default "full volume". which is too loud. By having the monitor button activated, cuefix is regulating the volume for the mackies, but this regulation isnt correct because shouldn't the levels be at 0db? my master levels are in the - range. So in order to get a balance between the active powered monitors and the interface we need something to mediate this?

and from reading the link below, i'm inclined to believe that a passive monitor controller will solve the problem.

what do you ppl think? is this the reason? problem solved??!!

I use a TC Level Pilot. Was $79 but comes with balanced cables attached.

The other option is to turn down the input attenuation on your monitors so your mix output levels and your monitoring level correspond?

BTW, we are talking about Cuemix, right? Not cuefix.
