Cursor 'jumping' / audio stuttering during playback?

Post by RenaissanceMan »

Hey everyone-

Running DP 7.24 in OSX Lion on a new MacBook Pro Quad Core machine. I'm working on my first audio project in this environment and am experiencing a strange problem. Almost everytime I hit the play button, the recorded audio plays normally for a moment and then the cursor freezes and then jumps forward in the project, combined with an audio pop/stuttering sound. Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a setting I can change that will resolve? Thanks-

EDIT: After doing some more experimentation, it appears the audio pops I'm hearing are actually not audio pops... Instead, it is the MOTU audio click that is stuttering rapidly for a moment if I have it turned on.

...I should also add that occasionally when I start playback with the audio click enabled in DP, the click is not aligned correctly with the audio until several bars have gone by... Is this related to the same issue?

I also experienced the symptoms you describe when I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. Downgrading to SL made them go away, for me anyway.

Did your MacBook come with Snow Leopard? If so, did you experience the problems with that OS?

My computer came with Lion installed, so I haven't been able to test in Snow Leopard.

Anyone have any insight? I'm having to close and restart DP every 10 minutes in order to continue to work on sessions right now... :(

Well your RAM is a bit low for starters. I'd also set your work priority setting to medium or low.

James, thanks for the reply. My current project only has 4 tracks of audio though, and I am not running any plugins. Are you saying that DP likes to have more than 4 GB of RAM just to run in this basic a configuration?

What I'm saying is I have no idea what's going on as I am not moving to Lion. Try work priority then. 4GB RAM is on the low side though for DP but since I don't have Lion system with 4GB RAM there's no way to answer your question.

Understood James, thanks again. I'll attempt to experiment with the Work Priority settings moving forward.

I actually just got off the phone with MOTU tech support and they are having me experiment with different auto-scroll settings for the windows to see if that makes a difference. While I was on the phone with them I was testing with these changes and for whatever reason it seemed to dramatically lower the frequency of times I would experience cursor hang. They also had me change the buffer setting, but I didn't notice a difference there. At this point they think it could possibly be a DP bug, as they did experience the exact same symptoms with another user who called in yesterday.

I appreciate the replies, and will post back once we get to the bottom of this. If all else fails, I just purchased a set of Snow Leopard 10.6.7 install discs that will work with my newer machine. :D :D :D

How do I turn my black blinking cursor back to a normal arrow? Last week, the cursor appeared as a normal arrow, then the next day (till now) it appeared as an irritating black blinking square, which is hard to use. I've already tried fiddling with the mouse settings in the control panel, but nothing seems to work!

Check your System Preferences>Universal Access>Open VoiceOver Utility. That is, if you're not a spambot.
