I can't think of a better way to celebrate than to dedicate the day to Nigel. Going to 11 takes on a whole new meaning.

It's a solemn, soul-stirring time down here in Oz, Remembrance day, especially for those to whom history means something.

Perhaps we could get the bugler to crank his horn to 11? :?

There's a bit of a legend around here, that the owner of the company -- who actually has an excellent sense of humour -- didn't laugh once during "Spinal Tap", because it was all too real to him.

In fact, the stories he told at AES a few weeks ago on a panel, were funnier than anything Rob Reiner came up with. :-)

[ Don't get me wrong -- I laughed so hard all three times I watched the film, that I missed 90% of the lines, and thus need to watch it at least seven more times! ]

All the same, 11/11/11 will be a day to remember...

Anyone notice how the roman numerals on that amp almost make it look like it has "channel 1" and "channel 11"...?

A lot of people didn't laugh when it came out because in a way you had to be willing to laugh at yourself a little. I too saw it in the theatre with a musician friend, and there are parts of that movie that we both could relate to because being in the thick of the metal band scene in the 80s we KNEW some of those characters and lived through that. Most identifiable scenario to most is the classic portrayal of the ONE guy in the band with the girlfriend who starts leading him around by the nose, butting in to band business and helping cause its demise.

I have heard that at the time of it's release many musicians were angry about it, but metal had gotten to a point where it was just begging for someone to satirize how ridiculous it had become, and Rob Reiner just exposed how stupid it looked from the outside-- a vantage point those of us on the inside looking out couldn't see from before that movie.

Sort of reminds me how Frank Zappa's vicious but spot on satire in Valley Girl shamed a whole generation of the "popular girls" in high school who said "Ohmigod! I SO do not talk like that! I'm so sure!" It's fun to shame an entire culture. I think South Park sort of did that with the Goth/Emo crowd, lambasting them as people who decried "conformists" yet creating their own set of values as to dress and behavior and then requiring conformity to those. :)

Not to get too O.T. -- and it isn't, really -- but there was an EXCELLENT faux documentary a couple of years back called "Brothers of the Head", about Siamese Twins who get recruited as a novelty act right as the punk explosion is happening. Rob Reiner makes a "guest" experience as a "consultant" who gets interviewed now and then during the film!

The music is written by Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks fame and is INCREDIBLE! Full of amazing energy and melodicism, but all the same narcissistic and quite ripe for self-parody.

Like "This Is Spinal Tap", the movie quickly accelerates through several musical fads that finally gave way to the main genre being spoofed (punk and new wave in this case).

It's educational and entertaining to hear your thoughts, fellas.

I think we all knew that guy, James. He's most often the central character (or is that his girlfriend?) of the plot to bring about the band's downfall. It's ironic, I s'pose, that it's "never" the intention, but most often the result.

At least a couple o' bands I played in banned girlfriends altogether from all band-related business and meetings; it was the only way, really, given the maturity of said spouses at the time. :?

Okay. 11-11-11 can't be *that* far away at this point. There's This, fwiw, but is there anything else worth noting?

I remain the proud owner of the UAD-1 which includes the Nigel guitar plugin that UAD-2 forgot. If nothing else, I hope to spend a good part of that day twiddling with the Nigel plugin and taking in a viewing of Spinal Tap.

I think the BluRay version uses dubbly.

And THIS is for true NT fans!

I used to laugh at the time Nigel fell onto his back whilst playing onstage and couldn't get up, then it happened to me...

Generation after generation love Spinal Tap. Here's to the upcoming Nigel Tufnel Day!
