Lion-- things to know

Post by Frodo »

Some things are obvious, like certain apps are not quite ready as of today. These include NI products, DP, UAD, and perhaps a few yet-to-be-named others, which members here will hopefully be willing to share as they encounter info.

In the General Macintosh category, I found this on a support page from one of my much-needed developers:
Apple has reversed mouse scrolling from previous versions of Mac OS X. For example, scrolling down will move the page up, and scrolling right will move the page left. This option can be changed in System Preferences > Mouse > Un-check Scroll with finger direction.
For DP users, this might be something to keep in the back of your minds especially for those using QuiKeys or similar. Once DP is ready for Lion, everyone might want to pay special attention to their Command Bindings.

Why? Because, apparently, "right" is the new "left" and "up" is the new "down". :?

Feel free to add your findings in this thread as you see fit.

Since there is no "new" MacBook Pro, SL will run on it.

I'm not certain you are correct.

I just yesterday, received my "new to me" brand-new MBP. It arrived with Lion already installed.

The apple store where I bought it gave me a copy of SL, so I could run old s'ware on my new computer if it came with Lion.

I'm sort of digging' Lion, so I don't want to scrub the drive to install SL. I just thought it would be easy enough to partition the drive and install SL in an empty partition and then, have a dual-boot setup so I could run older apps.

I don't know everything, but I couldn't find a way to install SL that Lion would permit. I even tried an external drive... no joy.

So, it seems like something in the set-up here is preventing me from loading SL... If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em.

Sometimes during the transition on OS upgrades, Apple will ship both the old and the new one with a new machine for a short period of time. I'm not sure if that window is closed or not though with the Lion update, but it's worth a shot to ask them.

Really? Why?

The latest, most current MacBook Pro was released in Feb. 2011. There is none newer. It will run OS 10.6.8 even if it ships with Lion.

I will be ordering a new iMac in a few days. If it comes pre-installed with Lion, I will most likely install Snow Leopard on it till my wife converts her files.

I am not certain that the new MacBook Air and Mac Mini will run 10.6 but I am certain about the rest of the line.

BTW, I live a couple of miles away from the mothership in Cupertino. There are plenty of people I can call on this - and I did.

Hi Mike,

All I know is that I got my new MBP (shipped from Shanghai) on Monday and it had Lion already installed. I had received a copy of SL from the Apple store at the time I did the deal and immediately partitioned the drive on my MBP and tried to install SL. For some reason I do not understand, it refuses to be installed.

As I said above, I'm OK with Lion at this point (other than not being able to load some older apps that, in reality, probably needed to be updated anyway...) and wouldn't scrub off Lion just to install SL. Especially now, since I'm not understanding why I can't install SL on a clean partition. It's almost like Apple has included some code or something that prevents what I'm trying to do. (Or I might just be paranoid... )

If you have any more info... or know of a way to get SL installed on my computer given my current situation with Lion already on board, I'd love to hear what you have to say...!

Follow up: Just talked to Apple Care and they tell me I can not install SL on a MBP that came with Lion.

I specifically asked them if the "Lion on board" MBPs are different than the pre-Lion MBPs and they told me yes and are supposed to get back to me and tell me specifically about the changes.

If anyone has info that contradicts this, please let me know how to install SL on my Lion on board MBP.

I'm not going to go crazy if the answer is that I just need to move on with Lion... but it seems pretty stupid to not be able to install SL on a machine (not mine specifically, MBPs in general) that is supposed to be the same and has been happily running SL for a while. ????

Another follow up:

The SL version I'm trying to use is 10.6.3 and it's been suggested the minimum version might be 10.6.7...

I'll try that and report back.

I don't know if this is any help, but you did try booting from the SL disc by holding down the "C" key on the keyboard?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did that right away...

I think the issue has to do with the Sandy Bridge stuff... I need to have version 10.6.7 or higher to make this work for me... and the only commercial release was 10.6.3, which I have and which will not work.

I'm not sure the higher version will work, but it's my best shot now.

Thanks again for you reply!!!
