Re: osx lion compatibility
well its strange cant believe you all seem to think this is controversial!
all I am hoping is for Lion to give me a seemless background autosave - no spinning balls - they are never welcome!
and if it does crash - the OS will restore my session right up to the second before?
( live seems to manage it well, I never noticed the autosave in Slowtools )
seems too good to be true - but if it is I for one am over the moon,,
actually its not too good to be true - the Fairlight MFX3+ I used for 10+ years worked exactly like this, even if you yanked the power out the most you would loose would be the edit before.. ( i actually tried this - and saw them demo it a few times and its true! )

All this speculation just gives us something to talk about until 10.7 actually ships and the testing can begin.

yeah I'm bored. u must be too else why else hang out here?
so easy to make a million posts when u feel u need to take a brake every 10 mins of being blasted at up to 105dB, today is premix and its loud!
I did see the new gestures - one of the favourite things about my laptop is the trackpad scrolling..
I did look at gettign the magic track pad (?) for my mac pro - but seems I cant easily get the bluetooth card for it. havent had a defiitive answer ..
but the gesture control might be a neat touch
another speculation on 10.7 when it "ships" is the versions - the abilty to copy and past between versions looks exciting too
- depends if it takes dp 6 mins to open the version like it does on some of my projects now,,,
its interesting the way that stuff with loads of audio in takes so long - I saw a thread about using play and that sounds sooo familiar to me.
only way to find out is to download and install.. sorry if I am excited about this - but its the first OS release I actually am looking forward to ( prepare for disappointment!! )

I concur.
I'm planning to install Lion on a clone and see what it does.

There are threads about that. An inexpensive usb bluetooth module works quite well with the Mac Pro - some users report that it is better than built-in if the computer is some distance away from the track pad.

I have a little iOGear high-speed USB bluetooth thingy in the control room that cost less than $20. I run Magic Trackpad, Magic Mouse, and a wireless keypad from that one thingy.
As for Lion, I'm not sure yet whether or not it will break my whole damn operation here, so I'm going to hold off for quite some time, probably. Apple is taking extreme heat from the recent Final Cut Pro fiasco, and there is every indication that they don't care if we like where they're going with things or not. I get the feeling that if I let them turn my Mac Pros into iPads and I complain about it, they will suggest that I switch to Garageband.

Is this at all comparable to modern computers and DAWs? I think there are major technological differences and increased complexity. For starters things can be more difficult when putting a DAW on top of general purpose hardware and OS. I'm assuming the Fairlight you speak of was built from the ground up for audio tasks?martian wrote:actually its not too good to be true - the Fairlight MFX3+ I used for 10+ years worked exactly like this, even if you yanked the power out the most you would loose would be the edit before.. Re: osx lion compatibility
yes please me too! which model? - becos I would love it..
thats a scary thought about lion - I already prefer QT7 over qtX - which is too dumb for us. ( ok it can be useful - but the choice is everything - I guess thats somethign to be wary of.. the whole app store thing is kind of weird for me (somehow?)
yes the fairlight was a machine custom built for audio. - had dedicated DSP engines and cards. I still have 2 in my studio until I move next week..
however it was actually running on Unix? so if you needed to do upgrade stuff / disk formats you would end up with a DOS like prompter..
it was an awesome machine and they still are - however a *bit* on the expensive side. ( compared to DP)
however PT is a bit expensive compared to DP - yet IMO DP kicks PT a$$!!!
there are features I would love to see from Fairlight on DP - clip gain maths - now we have absolute gain which is better than none ( suck that up PT ) fairlight had that AND clip gain maths - add 8dB to all these clips - brilliantly fast way of working!
especially with clip based EQ - and you could "fade" EQ and levels between clips - really it was revolutionary! you could basically automate with out a mixer.. "fading" a clip between it self at 2 levels.. in fact we can do that now with DP - its easier than fiddling with breakpoints. .. perhaps one for radio gal's thread on unusual editing uses..
