"Lite" Audio Sequencer

Post by kofasetic »

I have DP4, Logic 7 XPress, Reason 3, Live 5 (demo) and do not want to install on my machine just yet (I'll be migrating to a newer machine soon). I am looking for a simple audio sequencer just to record at least 2 tracks (guitar & drum machine). I have a great firewire interface, a MIDI controller and some soft synths. Just an app to record simple ideas. Thanks.

The latest Electronic Musician has a great article on this: "Sequencing on a Shoestring". Off the top of my head I'd suggest Garage Band or Tracktion. But sadly I've not really used either one. My drummer, who also uses DP, loves Garage Band too.
All the best,

Tracktion is already a good sequencer and it is has the potential to be a truly great sequencer! The editing is still a little primitive (although, IMO, no more so than Live or Reason) and the interface is a little alien at first, but it is incredibly efficient with CPU resources and is stable in that way that almost makes you forget about the computer. For example, I save after almost every edit in DP and in Tracktion I sometimes forget until prompted when closing a session.

I picked up the original while it was still free, and I've purchased the new version (T2) just to support Jules' work. I figure that with Opcode gone, somone needs to be nipping at the heels of Logic and DP to keep them focused. Besides, at $149 it's a bargain and the mix bus sounds great.

I've been toying with the idea of recording and doing the bulk of my editing in DP and then moving the MIDI side of my projects over to T2 for the improved performance and rewiring it back into DP. I've been a little underwhelmed with DP's MIDI performace lately which really seems to be having an impact on the groove of much of my work.

From what it looks like you have Live 5 (demo) and don''t want to install it yet on your machine because you're buying a new computer. I'm not entirely sure what that means, but what's wrong with Live for this application? Not the greatest engine in the world but it's a great composing tool and possibly perfect for what you're looking for. ??

GB is nice and very easy to learn. Limited editing.
