I'm pretty well done with the Giga Windows machines and I'm trying to figure out how to put a master Mac and a slave to work. I have an old G4 gathering dust and wonder if it will serve me well as a slave, or if I should go ahead and buy a used Mac Pro and load it up with memory. I'd like to use the slave to run LASS and other VIs.
Also I don't really understand how to connect the two machines so I can monitor audio out of the slave, or even if I have to . . .
I realize these are rather nebulous questions, but I've been searching for a good while and have yet to come across a thread that say "do it like this . . . "
I write music for TV and Film on the following setup: Two Mac Pro 12 Core 3.46 gHz, MacMini server slave, VEP 7, DP 9.52, KOMPLETE KONTROL S88, Ivory, Stylus RMX, Trilian, Omnisphere, Zebra 2, RealGuitar (and a real guitar), RealStrat, GigaStudio (2), LASS, Kontakt 6, Komplete 5, Lynx Aurora 8, and a real B3! WaHoo!
A G4 won't cut it with LASS. That said, get a used Mac Pro, buy Vienna Ensemble Pro software (and a Vienna Key) to host plugins on your slave computer, and the slaving to DP is seamless, through an Ethernet cable.
MacBook Pro 2021 (M1 Ultra) with 64 gigs RAM. DP 11.23
Anybody else want to weigh in on this? I figured the G4 was better served as a doorstop, but it didn't hurt to ask . . .
I think I will probably go the the Vienna Ensemble Pro unless someone comes up with another idea that makes sense.
