MOTU 828mk3 flashing green light!!!

Post by erikjamesmusic »

When I turn the unit on, all I get is a flashing green light that I can't get out of. This is exactly what happened to my last 828mk3 unit and I had to ship it back to MOTU, who couldn't fix it, so they sent me a new unit. Now this unit is doing the same thing. I know I'm not the only one with this problem, and Ronan from tech support says this is a physical issue with the unit and I'll have to send the unit back...again. Odds are that they will just send me a new unit (because I am under warranty), but this means I'll be out $20 for shipping and 2 weeks without an AD/DA!!! There's another $30 for renting something for the 2 weeks. So now I'm out $50 and I can't rely on this unit that I paid $750 for. Also, I sold my Apogee Ensemble to get this unit for it's compatibility with DP, and I NEVER had a problem with the Apogee unit.

Suggestions?

A thought: See if MOTU can charge your credit card for a new unit and send out immediately (to be waived when your old one gets to MOTU) or get authorization to buy a new one locally.

good thought HCMarkus. I will definitely try that. The original unit was bought at Alto Music though, although this unit IS the one that MOTU sent me as a replacement.

I still feel it's unacceptable that MOTU won't pay for shipping on this unit, OR pay for a rental unit that I'll need for the 2 weeks I'm without said unit. This is the second unit that's had this EXACT SAME problem!!!

Just talked to MOTU tech support again and proposed that since they are 1) unwilling to cover the shipping costs of their faulty replacement unit, and 2) are unwilling to cover the costs of renting a unit during this 2 week turnaround time, perhaps they could pre-ship me a new 828mk3 since they already know that this will be the outcome. That way, I could have the least amount of down-time possible. Their response:

MOTU: NO
Me: Why? You already know that you'll have to send me a replacement unit.
MOTU: We don't know that for sure.
Me: Yes you do. Just look at our last tech link. Same exact thing happened with my last unit and you sent me a new one.
MOTU: We still cannot pre-ship a unit, you have to send yours in first.
Me: I understand that's your normal policy, but do you understand that this will be the 2nd time in 5 months that I'm out $50, including shipping/rental costs just to remain up-and-running?
MOTU: Yes, I understand, but that's simply our policy.
Me: Can I at least PURCHASE a NEW 828mk3 from you with my credit card so you can send it out right away, and then wave that purchase when you determine the faulty unit needs to be replaced?
MOTU: No.

Guys, am I wrong in being pissed off at MOTU for this answer? Keep in mind that even when they DO send me a new 828mk3, I've determined that this is an unreliable make/model. I'm between a rock and a hard-place it seems.

Ugh, mine just flashed again last night!!

I had this problem less then 5 months after I purchased. I too had to send my in for repair. Since then it had been working great, but last night it f'ed up again. I walked the dog and when I returned all the lights on the unit were on and the unit was sending white noise at max volume, glad the mixer was muted... I powered it off and back on again, and the infamous "flashing green light". I powered off again and waited about 5min and powered on again, this time it booted. I hope I do not have to pay to ship the unit to MOTU again. I bought the 828mk3 because my 2408mkII has never f'ed up, NEVER! Sh*t always happens in the middle of a project/session, :shake:
