Used MOTU 828 mk2

Post by coolemusic »

Hello everyone, newbie here...
I just bought 2 828 mk2's from a home studio enthusiast, and I'm pretty happy with the fact that Garageband recognizes the inputs and everything seems to connect, but I am not able to install the included software because the original owner couldn't find the keycode. Any advice? Usable keycodes welcome! I see on the MOTU site that I can call, but it is the weekend, they are Monday through Friday, and I want to spend the day tomorrow working with these. I am able to set up a few inputs using only the front panel control on the devices, but as soon as I shut down power, everything defaults back to a 44.1 sample rate. I'm sure there are a number of things like this I'll run into, so I'm initializing a lifeline here early. Computer is a 2010 27"iMac, 4G RAM, 1TB. Thanks ahead of the advice!

By "the original software", Are you referring to AudioDesk that was bundled with the unit or the drivers?

The drivers do not require a serial number nor do they require the CD. You need to create a user profile on the MOTU site to access the download area for those. The ones on your install CD are certainly out of date.

Once you have access, go to Downloads, then Audio Downloads - Mac, then FireWire/USB
Download and install FireWire and USB Audio Driver Installer for Mac OS X dated 2011/03/29

AudioDesk II requires the CD for Authorization and a serial number. I think the number is inside the cover of the user manual but don't recall for certain. Being a Digital Performer user, I haven't used AudioDesk since 1997 or so. If you are on OS 10.6, you need AudioDesk 3, a downloadable free upgrade, but it requires an install and authorization of v.2 to install.

AudioDesk is not your problem, however, nor do you need to run the CD to install the drivers if using it with GarageBand.

He sent me the original bundled software and when I tried to download the updated version, it stated that I need to have a previously installed (and presumably authorized) version of the software.

That's AudioDesk. Remembering back when I bought my 828 mkII, the CD installed the drivers and AudioDesk together. I edited my first post - see it again.

You may have to set up your 828 for audio in and out in System/Audio before you set it up in Garage Band.

I have no trouble getting to remember its settings in Logic and Digital Performer.

I would search the thread MOTU Hardware & Mac OSX for more comprehensive answers. This really isn't a General Macintosh question.

Not around here. Read James' postings on software piracy.
