Motu Microbook

Post by deltasong »

Hi,

I'm contemplating buying the mysterious Microbook after getting rid of my Duet (The Motu Microbok is been sold as an alternative to the apogee one)

Has anyone here used one? how is the audio quality and reliability, and is it worth it?

I recently set one up for a friend. I haven't really used it all that much myself, so there is a limited amount I can tell you. My friend isn't particularly technically savvy, and he seems to be making it work OK.

As far as the sound goes, what little I've heard suggests that it's comparable to what you'd get from other current Motu interfaces, but probably not quite on par with apogee interfaces. In other words, for most applications, more than adequate to the task.

I don't know exactly what I did wrong when initially setting it up, but it did not power up when I connected it for the first time. I reinstalled the driver and it's booted up fine ever since. One other thing to be cautious of is not overloading the USB bus while trying to use it, which I think mostly means using firewire or other non-usb external drives. You should also keep in mind that there are no external physical controls-- everything is done through cue-mix.

My overall assessment is that for $250, you get a lot of bang for the buck.
