I got a neat idea for Apple.....

Post by jcotner »

I was reading about hackers already compromising OS-X on Intel to the point where it's running on generic PCs. Seems to me that what Apple should do to be able to keep from getting run into the ground by pirated software is to use something like "ahmmm" ILok to be able to boot OS-X on Intel. Before the collective groan, this sort of thing could drive Apple into oblivion when IPod dries up and they can't sell enough legit OS-X copies to survive. And when the hackers finally hack ILok and all the titles that use it for protection fold up we can sit around smugly with copies of our DP manuals in our hands, grinning and saying "You didn't get us, we're still here" :D Oh well, silly commentary commemorating the new board being up and working well!

Ilok is so much better than the crappy system used for my EOS Borwser software. It uses a sofware key called Zeus. You get two keys that have to be installed onto the hard drive and then uninstalled back to the floppy disk before erasing the hard drive. After a hard drive crash, I only have one key left. The best part, the company that made the software is now out of business. So next hard drive crash, kiss the software goodbye. At least a USB key should last a while even if the company goes out of business. Software like the EOS browser (OS 9 only) will alwyas be useful and is not effected by the latest sample rates or whatever. Do I really worry if I will still be able to ues OS X on a 1.2GHz Mac 10 years from now, I doubt it.
