Mac MIDI utility setup

When I set up my mac MIDI configuration I did the connect the icons with each other ie. 828 to the Dm5 and 828 to the MIDI controller or keyboard
I also named another icon as the apple software synth which is actually
an internal VI and drew the connections. Is this connection to the VI necessary or retarded. I can't get the MIDI to render over to audio no matter what input output I try and match and I am on a misssion try see what I screwed up. It worked great for the past 6 months and I did something somewhere that is truly driving me up over the wall. Freezing ain't workin either. Helllllllllllllp mister wizzzzard!
