Raw and Funky - featuring bass

Post by Dan Worley »

Vallejo Funk

Vallejo Funk - rev1 (after I had some time to work on it)

When I first did a preliminary mix of this song some years back, Mr. James Brown used to listen to it once in awhile to get geared up for his concerts. I was thrilled, to say the least.

The bass player is my friend Rob Watson from Vallejo, Ca. Rob used to play lead guitar for Mr. Brown until he passed away. Mr. Brown, that is. Rob is alive and well and thrilling audiences as usual.

Anyway, somehow I lost that preliminary mix and so I had to do another quick one this evening as a request. Trying to keep it raw and funky. The least amount of everything.

Unmastered.

Hope you enjoy it.

Rob Watson - Basses and Guitar
Billy Shoes Johnson - Drums
Robert Reason - Piano

Ugh! Now that I have time to come back to this mix, I realize I made a ton of mistakes in my haste to get it done in the time I was given (it was a last-second rush job). The most glaring mistake or screw up is that the kick is almost non-existent (I knew that but didn't have time to correct it at the time) and somehow it ended up panned completely to the left. What? How did I not hear or see that? What a doof!

Okay, so later this evening or tomorrow I'm going to fix it up. This brings up an interesting challenge. The low bass guitar hogs the low frequencies and masks the kick drum almost completely. I remember dealing with that when I first mixed this song. The goal is to have the two play well together tonally and support one another and give it the oomph it needs. I don't like how the kick was recorded so I'll have to reshape it or replace it--the latter being the last resort because I like to use what was recorded live.

We'll see how it goes. I'll post an updated version when I'm done.
