HELP - Duplicate copy of DP launches when...

Hello Folks - hope I can find a solution to this issue:

I have seen this exact same (reliably repeatable) situation on two separate Mac systems now - one on my laptop and one on a Mac Pro...

It has taken me sometime to repeat the situation enough to get to this point as well!

Whenever I open the Interapplication MIDI window in DP 7.22 and click the box to turn on Software Synthesizer on the bottom (Apple Software Synth), the computer immediately launches a duplicate copy of DP - verified by the dock. This duplicate copy eventually says not responding in the Force Quit window, and then when you force quit this copy, you get a message from the OS saying: "You have forced DLSSoftSynth to quit."

As soon as I de-select and then re-select the Software Synthesizer icon in this Interapplication MIDI window, the same situation repeats. I didn't know what it was for a long time because my Default new project template includes the checkbox for the Software Synthesizer. I like to use the Apple Software Synth for quick MIDI sketches of tune ideas, and other purposes.

I have completed de-installed, and then re-installed DP and all associated drivers for the interface, and now it still does the same thing.

Can anybody help me figure this out please?

I wonder where the second DP icon in the Dock would lead to if Show In Finder were chosen.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried this and the working copy of DP in the dock points to the appropriate application file DP 7.22. However, when I do this with the duplicate copy of DP that starts up upon enabling interapplication MIDI it also points to exactly the same file...

I have no other versions of DP on my machine - even chunked the DP 7.2 so there is only DP 7.22 file...

Any other ideas or help anyone?

Strange.

I know nothing about the apple synth, as I never use it. Is it a Quicktime thing?

Apple Software Synth:

It is the built in general MIDI synth module in the Mac OS. It has always worked just fine before in DP. When the software synthesizer button is enabled at the bottom of the Interapplication MIDI window (found under SETUP), you can create a MIDI track and one output destination that is always there is Apple Software Synth-1, Apple Software Synth-2, up to 16...

Now anytime I enable the software synthesizer it launches this duplicate copy of DP - it eats up system resources and will cause a crash or really slow response. You can force quit it, but as soon as you reset the software synth button it comes back... Really maddening!!

Is anyone else experiencing my situation running DP 7.22?

Again, I had this same thing happen on two completely different computer systems!

It would seem that Softsynth is the culprit since no one else is reporting a similar problem. I disabled all the useless audio components and probably have Softsynth as I don't delete Apple programs (so upgrades don't go wonky when they can't find them). But I wouldn't run it for exactly the reason you're stating. Since it appears to screw around with some basic permissions (yeah, probably a Quicktime thing) I don't want to chance it. With some pretty nice VIs out there for $100 or less, using the Apple version seems kind of limiting unless you're using it for a specific kind of (cheesy) sound. ☺ Even the VIs that come with DP are pretty good as well - or at least as good as Softsynth, but most importantly - without the issues like the one you are seeing.

Seriously, this is something for MOTU and Apple. Have you contacted MOTU about it?

Hello.

I had this issue and I've found this thread talking about it:

You'll find solutions in it and it have fixed my problem.
Basically, it's related to Core MIDI and trashing DP pref was working for some people.
For me, I had to erase PT MIDI drivers (as I describe in detail in the linked thread)
