switching to Mac for my studio
I have been nursing a custom PC with CuBase for the last 6 years and now have decided to go Mac!( I might be a lot of bit stubborn and a little bit of a slow learner, not necessarily in that order)!! I have a 2408mk3 with a 424-PCI card. The new Macs are all PCI express but there are plenty of older G5s that will do what I need. I know the PCI and PCI express are completely different but I have found a couple with PCI-x slots, are these compatible with the 424-PCI card? Or do I need to stick to PCI only. I bought a used G4 Powerbook and have done 16 channel live recording with Audiodesk(I usually don't need MIDI) and was blown away that a 1.67G ppc processor handled all that even at mixdown with Logic(it was installed on my Powerbook). I have seen a couple of posts about exploding liquid cooling parts and wish to avoid them. Is there an exchange program the MOTU does to swap out cards? Any info along these lines would be most helpful. Thanks
There is TRUTH in Exile. Tascam DM-24 and an Allen & Heath Mixwizard 16:3 and several tube Preamps into a 2408 mk3, Custom PC: P-4HT @ 2.6G, 40G sys drive, 120G storage + 250G(external) storage drive, Radeon 9600, 1 37"1080p video monitor, Yamaha HS-80 studio monitors with the HS-10 to fill the bottom. In a kickin room that was a joy to build.

.
Joe, I'm sorry I can't answer your PCI questions. I just want to tell you that a G5 will hardly feel like a real new Mac. Even if you get one very cheap, it will not run Snow Leopard, and even some early Intel machines will not be supported with soon-to-be-released Lion.
My point is that you'd be investing into something that is already dead...
Get an Intel Mac (at least)!

Re: switching to Mac for my studio
Thanks for the encouragement, I would love to buy a new Mac and a new 424 PCI express card (along with a new DM2000!!!), but for that cost I am seriously going to consider a hard disc recorder! I am trying to utilize what I have with the least expense at this point. But thanks.
