Wrong section... try the Mac section (or maybe JS or S can move it).

Looks like the gap is rapidly closing on the used Mac Pro 1,1 I bought last year.

Oops.. I should have said "my 'stop-gap' MacPro 1,1." Looks like it's frozen out of 64-bit paradise. Better get my act together and sell my G5 and it soon as I can and maybe find a Nahalem Quad.

Dunno, but things are headed to Mt. Doom faster than I can keep up with them.

Oh c'mon, repurpose them. You can think of something can't you?Frodo wrote:Man. These doorstops are getting expensive.
I got about 30 of 'em, and they're all doing something, even if it's stupid.

I've only got the G5 and I seem to be the one doing stupid things with it...

Re: Lion will drop support for earliest Intel Macs..
You could always use the old Macs as VE Pro support machines.
Re: Lion will drop support for earliest Intel Macs..
Hmmm, I have two areas - one where I track, and one where I mix, and a Mac Pro in each area. I've always kept identical systems on each, but now this changes everything. My older 4 core machine will probably not be supported.
Obsolescence seems to be coming at a much faster pace these days, ehh.

Re: Lion will drop support for earliest Intel Macs..
That's sort of where I am, Phil. As long as the stuff is working well then everything's fine. Now that protocols and compatibilities are being adjusted the question now is focused on how much time remains before a new machine will be a must. I'm already running a network, so when the time comes it could be a double-dollar whammy to bring everything up to date.

Re: Lion will drop support for earliest Intel Macs..
Well I figure my dual quad is good for one more generation - however I don't know if upgrading it to Lion would even be worth it. Once a system is built and configured, unless there are bug fixes available for things that - well - bug me, I consider it a more or less sealed appliance for its lifetime. There is no reason to upgrade and the thing should be good for at least 5-7 years if not as many as 10 (the last PPC's were sold about 8 years ago).
I don't see anything in Lion that is really compelling except for AVFoundation - really the return of QuickTime authoring to the platform. AVFoundation was introduced in ios 4 to unify access to various media formats. Makes sense to bring it to the Mac now. Even then, I'd only consider that potentially useful for film work.
